Got a real drama with my 95 v8. Idle problems and misfire on take off. New stepper motor, new coil pick up in Dizzy, new Dizzy cap, new rotor button, new plugs (properly gaped), new leads, new HEI ignition module, new coil (Acel) and new computer. Still no fix. Dealer shakes his head. Tried everything. I think he also tested the coolant temp sensor. The fuel injectors dont leak - in any event it has exaclty the same problems on LPG (a little worse which is typical - if there is a problems with ignition/timing of ignition on petrol it will be worse on LGG). It got be buggered. Has anyone got any clues as to why it would idle rough with all this stuff brand new (and other units tested in case they had a "new" fault) and have a miss on take off. There seems to be no miss in the high rev ranges, but then again V8s are good at masking a mis up top. The only thing I can think of is to put a 12v oscilascope on the seat beside the dealer and take it for a run to see if there is reduced spark or a no spark on misfire. I have a nasty feeling that it will be a dodgy wire/connection in the wiring loom. Any advice would be greatly appreciated - this babey is costing me a small fortune in parts and LABOUR!!

Check for timing chain popped teeth on timing gear.

Check distributor for worn bushings or possible broken/missing advance springs?

I would also try a genuine coil rather than Accel. I've had no probs with a Bosch coil.

Could also be a poor earth connection. Happened to mine and replaced lead/connector and overcame intermittant but annoying fault

Air gap in the distributor correct? Can produce symptoms you describe.

Could be out of Time.... Distributor wearing out Timing gears, cam lobes getting warn, sticking valve.....hmmm unfortunatly the list can go on, I would find a good engine mechanic and ask for some advice.

I would agree with Joey on the sticking valve if all the obvious things have been looked at. Putting it on an osiliscope will find if you have and ignition problem or a mechanical problem. Also perform a running compression test. This is done by checking each cylinder one at a time with a commpresion gauge while the engine is running (idleing). If one cylinder is lower than the rest the valve could be sticking or a valve spring problem. Another thing to look at is the valve operation. Remove both valve covers and rotate the engine by hand and watch the rocker arms if one doesn't "rock" as much as the others it may point to a cam lobe being worn. Ho Ho Ho Dennis

95s don't have the valve problems 96 and later do.....I'm wondering whether any of the various pipes that provide vacuum to bits of the engine have become porous...I do second the use of genuine parts for the ignition system of these trucks.

The earlier engines didn't show the same valve problems because the EFI system wasn't as sensitive to detect and store a fault, but they had problems. I worked on Land Rovers for 14 years and can tell you that if a misfire can't be detected in the ignition or fuel systems to look for a mechanical problem with the engine.

I had one of the Acel coils for about a week. Man did it produce issues. Have you checked the MAF?
