Lewis,

Number plates (licence plates) in the UK have to be white at the front and Yellow at the back, they also have to be of a reflective backgound and the letters and numbers have to be of a certain size and spacing. We have yellow at the back as the white ones can cause too much glare from your lights at night. Technically you are allowed yellow ones on the front but you don't see any, mainly to make us look different from the rest of Europe. You're not even allowed to get plates made up unless you take your vehicle registration document to the shop. Generally the registration gives you an indication of the age of the vehicle, using various complicated codes of numbers and letters, although you can buy registration numbers from the DVLA and agencies at a premium cost, for example "K 1 NGS" was sold many years ago for £250,000, although a plate with your initials on it like "B 19 SRE" (as bought by a frind of mine a few months ago cost about £300. I hope you found that interesting, Merry Christmas.

Alan

It's ridiculously complicated now. I just came back Friday night. They gave up on the single year letter prefix, now it's a 2 letter city code, 2 digit half year code and 3 letters! Example BM02ABC - means it was made in Birmingham (maybe wrong code, I don't remember) in the first half of 2002. If it was BM52ABC, it was made in the second half of 2002. I never understood why they insist on showing the year of the vehicle in the number plate. Oh, well.
