I'm putting in a Det & Tru Trac set up on my 98' D1. Should I go with synthtic gear oil? And will any additive work for the limited slip? Auto Zone only carries one brand.

I'm using slick 50, no problems...I think CRC makes a additive that supposed to help with chattering...

cheers

The TruTrac / Detroit doesn't need any additives. It is not a friction plate setup like most limited slips, it is gear driven. Just use a quality synthetic oil like Mobil 1, Amsoil, Royal Purple, or Red Line.

Do NOT NOT put synthetic in with brand new diffs - let them break in with cheap 80w90 gear oil. You have to change it in the first 1000 miles anyway as it will be full of crap from the new diffs. Also - the synthetic will not let anything wear in properly.

After that - just go with the synthetic of your choice.

Bill is right. But, when you do change at 1000-1500 miles or so I used the Lucas additive in my Detroit. That stuff is super thick, and seemes to quite down the unit a bit. The TT advises an additive is not needed. I use Valovline 90w there. I change my diff fluid so offen that I just cannot justify going with a synthetic. Once I use up the last of the bottles I have I am going to just buy it by the 5 gallon bucket, and use a pump.

Yea, good catch on not using synth for breaking them in.
