Viscous pulley was wobbling, shut down the truck, tried to tighten with a wrench, fired up the truck again and barely got it started. It caught, but a lot of vibrations from the engine/viscous fan pulley area. Popped hood and noticed oil started to spray from the area (not enough to notice from where, but it was on other ancilliaries and under the hood). Was able to nurse the truck home about a mile, then shut it down, and had to head out of town immediately (was pouring all day today and did not get a chance to look close enough when i was in the parking lot either). What possibilities could it be? Is there a seal in the Viscous pulley area? Looking at the manuals, maybe the Crankshaft Pulley Assembly or Front Cover Oil Seal? Either of these possible? This a major catastrophe or ? Oil light never came on, no warning lights ever tripped and temp gauge never went above middle. I really wish I could look at the truck, but won't be able to until Friday night. In the meantime, please offer some suggestions as to what to look for. Thanks all! -Robbie |

Could just be from fried fan clutch - ie the silicone fluid. If it is cold/cool were you are, just remove the fan for now and drive it - see if anything else sprays around after a shport test ride. You don't really need the fan in cold weather anyway. Bill |

The thing you are most likely seeing is antifreeze. The water pump bearings give out, and they wobble terribly and spray. There is a very slight possibility that the water pump is OK and the coupler is itself leaking the silicone fluid, but 9 of 10 odds are for the water pump

Thanks Bill. I am hoping for something along those lines, it is just really pissing me off that I can't take care of it and check right now. Does silicone fluid look/smell like regular oil? By the way, truck is in Fairfax, VA right now (home), so that will be the first thing I do when I get home Friday night. |

Thanks for another suggestion. At least these are things I can easily tackle myself. My fear on my trip out was that the front cover came apart or something horrendous. |

got home a little bit ago, and it looks like the water pump. have some coolant leakage and the fan is definitely wobbling from bad bearings i am guessing. fan is being a bitch to remove though and hopefully will get the proper tools in the morning to take care of it. thanks again for the advice. |

I just changed my viscous fan coupler last week. I used a strap wrench on the water pump pulley to hold it still while wrenching on the coupler. Good luck. |
