hey dwebbers, got some xmas day questions for you. A few weeks ago i posted about my spark plug wires that i had ordered from roversnorth and put on my 96 disco. i had thought they were junk becasue shortly after i put them on i started getting the random multiple misfire codes coupled with the excessive emissions due to misfires. well i ordered some magnacore 7.5mm blue wires and replaced the other ones. i also checked the gaps on the plugs which were put in new a few months ago and they were all set correctly. i changed the wires and was feeling happy with myself for 24hours then i got the same code again. what should i look for next?

i should also mention that i have been having a bit of intermittent trouble with a rough idle on start up. there doesn't seem to be much rhyme or reason as to when the rough starts occur. it is not everytime qand doesnt occur all the time. and it only happens on start up it runs fine otherwise. i was however reading a post earlier and someone had mentioned having rough start ups and suggested bad fule pressure. so i have treid a few times to turn the key to the power on mode and let it sit there for a 20 seconds or so and when i have done this i have not gotten the rough idle. this has not been a scinetific test study though and it could just be coincidental.

one other thing i should mention is that i lost my gas cap a few months ago and purchased a stant replacement. the only problem is that the stant guide book that tells you which model to buy didnt list the disco. it only had the range rover listed. so since i had no gas cap i figured id try it. I am not so sure now that it fits well enough to create a good seel. I dont have the whoosh of air come out of it like i used to. so i think thats a prob.

please read these random bits of info and symptoms and give me your advice please... amd please please dont tell me it's a valve job... tha'ts not the xmas present im hoping for. also my only reason for not assuming that its the valves is that i do not get lose of power at high speed. the check engine light only comes on with in a few minutes of having started the enigine and driving at slow speeds. also if it were the valves would'nt i get a specific cyclinder number misfire in the engine code?

i would also like to throw in the fact that i live in the San francisco bay area. i live in the oakland hills and it is very rainy and theres always a lot of moisture up here in the hills. so i am wondering if i am getting a lot of condensation on the ignition system and when i run it for a few minutes the moisture all condenses and causes arcing.. just a wild guess though

ok, what ever the cause i wanna get down to it. plesae help me out if you have the time.

Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year to you all. thanks in advance for your time.

Four coils on a 96....
With new leads don't think condensation is an issue
Fuel cap unlikely
but I think you may be on to something with the fuel pressure...

so would fuel pressure give me the misfire codes? also how do i check the coils to see if they are bad? is it just a buy new ones and see if its fixed? or is there a diagnostic way to look at it?

Howboucha Jason!
Valves

My XD had a valve job done in August before I bought it at 32K. At 44K I was experiencing the same issues as you are. I replaced plugs, still there. I switched fuel pumps with my LE, no difference. I checked all plug wires, no change.
I bought a OBDII computer, multiple misfires across the board. Wiped out the codes and it ran fine. Took it to LR in Indy, another valve job at 43K.
Just my input.

When I was having this problem, I posted a note. There was a bunch of great advice about what to look for, and someone mentioned an additive that helps out.

Good luck,
Brendan

Try a can of BG44k. Do you get an o2 code? Are the wires put on in the correct order? Gas cap would definitely cause problems starting. Couple this with bad o2 and dirty injectors.

charles no i don't get an o2 code. i get the PI316 and the PI300 codes only. and i do have the wires in the correct order , i checked that right away.
