Strange problem w/my 95'D1....Several times I've tried to start it up and when I turn the key in the ignition all electical power shuts down...the clock and radio completely lose power..if I wait a few minutes sometimes it starts right up....then I noticed that when I unlock the rover using the key (key fob needs reprogramming) the power shuts down again. I installed a new battery just recently. Is this a problem with the disable feature of the central locking system?, hood switch? door actuator? Radio? Alarm? Any help would be appricated....Thxs. Gregg

I had the same issue on my 95. it was the voltage regulator acting up. Replaced with no issues since.

Will: Could you fill me in with little more info. Is the voltage regulator attached to the altenator? or is is located elsewhere....could this be a potential problem with the altenator as well? Just wondering...Thxs. Gregg

Gregg, I had the same problem with my 97. Turn the key, nothing happened, the radio and clock would shut down and loose power. In my case I found that the ground on the battery worked loose and was causing the ramdom problem.

I agree with Mark -- start with simple things that installation of a new battery disrupted, then work your way up the expense ladder.

Start with the terminals and battery cables -- do your have a good connection?

Then check the ground straps.

Etc., etc., etc.

Greg...That is another thing. Check your cable to your starter as well. Sometimes it will come loose and cause issues. Also I noticed your dealer offered you a voltage regulator...Can you get the part number?? Thanks!

Will: I checked the negative battery terminal and found some corrosion....pulled both pos. and neg. cables and cleaned and re-attached. Also found a split in outer the small (blue?)wire with the female connection that plugs into the male tab in the base, behind the alternator (is this voltage regulator?. Sealed up the break in the wire with RTV and blk. electical tape. Looked for grounding straps...are the the ones on the exhaust manifold something to be looked at? I've driven the truck several times today and no repeat of the power loss....yet. I found some paperwork from the previous owner...he replaced the old alternator 2 1/2 years ago with a new Bosch unit at 90K..We now have 120K on the odom. I don't think the alternator is at fault here. I'll check the cable to the starter as well... the Rover dealer said he could order voltage regulaters based on the amps of the alternator. I did'nt get part numbers but I can try to track some part #s for you next week. Thxs. for your help!! Gregg

I 'm guessing you're looking at a new (or rebuilt) alternator. Most people buy rebuilt and it seems to take more than one to get one to work. A bad diode in the built-in v reg causes a backdrain out to ground when not in use.

Take loose the pos cable and install a little 12v trailer side light. Should not lite(very dim if at all). If it's nice and bright your reg is bad.

Some posts say pay the 600$ for new from the dealer. If you get rebuilt get it from someone reputable as more than one seem to be needed for some of us. My second rebuilt over charged and burned up but was covered by Nathan.

Good luck!

Greg, read you post and you noted no repeat of power loss... after you had cleaned both pos and neg.

I just experienced what you decribed during the test drive. Just picked my used 98 Disco and going thru cleaning/fine tuning process from old owner (who could have done a better job with up keep) to me being the new (anal about the up keep) owner.

Found the cable conn corroded. After cleaning the terminals and cable conn using wire brush, sprayed battery cleaner and then applied battery terminal seal, starts like a champ! Even slap one of those battery terminal pad on each to make it look pretty!
