Dear honored Dwebbers, we plan to visit Baja California in mid-February. Our schedule actually is to fly Frankfurt to San Diego (07.Feb 04), rent a vehicle there and head south into the Peninsula as far as we can get, then back to Palm Springs where we will meet my parents, and on to San Diego again to fly back to germany. Any Infos are welcome, but for a start here are some questions: 1. What vehicle? The most stylish variant, to ship the Diesel-Disco from germany, is not an option for economical reasons. In a german travel magazine 10 years ago I found an article where a Silverado Pickup with Cabin (18ft) was featured. They said it was rented from Cruise America and driving across the border was allowed. Although it was 2wd, I guess it would suit our needs perfectly. I visited the Cruise America website, but they seem to have only a bigger, bulky 22ft version now. Where's the best place to rent, mayby in Mexico? We will probably bring our Dog (Terrier) with us, so a closed cabin would be better then a J**p and a tent. The vehicle must be able to drive the byways, but 2wd will do. A Volkswagen Bus would also be ok for us. 2. RV-Parks or free camping Is it possible to camp out in the wilderness? If so, do you have recommendations for good places? Even GPS Coordinates? 3. How is the weather in February? Warm enough for a T-Shirt? 4. Things to avoid? Thank you for your support. |

Sounds like a bunch of fun. I'll check on some of your Q's later today as i'm heading to lunch and the post office. But I have rented from Cruise America, a 27' motor home to pull a jeep on a trailer to camp jeep in '00. It was in surprising good shape! And they were very nice at check in. They didn't nic-pic the cleanly-ness of it, or the fact that it wasn't topped off all the way with gas. Or the dog hair everywhere. Just wanted to tell my experiance with them. More later, Lewis |

Thanks Lewis. I revisited their page and they still offer the 18/19ft truck, but not at all stations. Can't wait to hear more of your Baja experience. Jens |

You may have problems finding a US rental company willing to rent you a vehicle to travel into Mexico... |

Thanks, Bill. Cruise America allows driving into Mexico, so this will be no prob. But I just realized that my passport has arabic stamps all over it, so your customs guys gonna have a ball with me, mistaking me for Disco-Ali, the most wanted Al-Qaida-Terrorist. Seems I need a new passport. Great! Hal al ma u fi al kubul en! |
