Well I gone and done it' I've put a set of 255/85s on my DII(with a 3in lift). Now I need to do some trimming. Anyone have any advice, experence or tech articles before I start hacking away?

Thanks

Tom:

Take back the 255/85s and get some 265/75s and you won't have to trim anything.

Actually, I just whipped out the math. If you are talking about 16" rims, there is a 1.42" difference in tire height (diameter). Dividing that by 2 (radius), basically you get .71" of additional clearance.

My question would be: is the additional .71" of clearance under my diffs justification to to do any trimming?

I guess my advice would ultimately be don't do it. If you are hell bent on doing it, I would sleep on it a few days--giving serious consideration to what you are about to do.

I just wouldn't have the stones to do it to my DII.

Yes I'm hell bent and no the tires are not going back. Thanks for your two cents.

hmm, doing the math again--

David, your tire diameter is only .26 inches smaller than Tom's. Strange that you don't rub and Tom's does.

Anyway, doing more math--

I looked at my rig and measured the distance between the edges of the wheel wells. It looks like it is about 34". Tom, your wheel diameter is about 33"--leaving you with 1/2" on each side. With any articulation, I can definitely see how you'd rub.

Seems to me if you trim, you'd need to find some wheel flares to cover your cutting. I'm also thinking about the plastic pieces that line the top of the wheel wells; how would you resecure them? Currently they are screwed to the edge of the wheel wells. Then there are the rear doors. Lots to think about.

Definitely send me pictures when you're done.

I have 265/75's on 16" steelies with a OME heavy springs all the way around, and I had to trim the front bumper. We did it with a cutting wheel and it turned out fine. I just followed the line of the fender and it looks great. You can't tell unless you're looking for it. I also had to trim the plastic on the rear side of the wheelwell too, but I'm going to replace those with some sliders anyway. Good luck!

Tom, where do you plan on trimming?

I've completely trimmed my front fenders, rear fenders, and rear doors. It wasn't easy, and isn't for the faint of heart. This is to run 9.00x16 XZL's (36.5"). I also had to lengthen my radius arms 1".

However, I know of a few people running 255's on their DII's with 3" lifts, and they didn't trim. Don't do it unless you have to. It's a lot of work and a big PITA. Plus, to make it look nice you'll need to splice two sets of flares together to cover the cuts.

Greg, I havn't had a chance to measure yet but it looks like I just need to remove some plastic. I want to stay away form cutting the metal if possible. So far the rear mud flaps and the front of the stock plastic running boards days are numbered.
