Hi all, after 63k ive done the following in past couple of months:
Replaced Exhaust gaskets, MAF sensor, brake sensor, new plugs,
injection flush, fuel filter, valve cover gaskets, trans and radiator
fluid replacment.

On my drive home last Thursday i noticed a vibe on highway and this
morning a screetching noise and then viberation from driveline
started for the first time, it seems more like the front than rear.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.
thx
Al

Universal joints on the back half of the front drive shaft. DO NOT drive it anymore until you remove the shaft and fix them.....

Well for starters I am very serious , dont drive it. When the joints come apart the whole mess will more then likely got through the side of the trans and that makes for a very bad day. Land Rover MIGHT replace the shaft if you take it to them. They know it has been an issue and it was an issue when you left the show room floor with it. If you get no love from them just get any drive line shop to change them out for greasable units..

Al, at 63K your probably hosed for LR covering it. Also, at 63K you made it a lot longer than others. There are others on this BBS that has had these fail, sometimes causing huge $$$ damage. Mine failed at 46K and LR warrantied the entire shaft. However, since I know I have a spinning time bomb down there, I talked to Bill at:

http://www.greatbasinrovers.com/

For $99 he sent me new serviceable u-joints, a couple of extra fittings (one for the shaft itself) and a fitting for your gun.

Yes. Why? Because the rear driveshaft comes as an assembly.

Do NOT wait around...I changed mine out at 62K after all the warnings on this board, I had almost no vibe...but the joints were worn out. Spend the $100 and save potentially thousands. It WILL come apart and if you are doing say 50 mph+++, the shaft WILL go thru your gearbox housing taking cats and anything else in the way.

Rear rotoflex is easy to fix. Mike M from Land Rover Westchester (he posts on the board) helped me out and got me a nongenuine one. Since replacing it I have no vibes.

Al,

I went with GBR on this as well. The entire shaft assy was like $390. Installing this replaces the roto with a u-joint. There are other tech theads going on write now about the centering peg removal and Bill Gill has a wonderful tech write-up.

I'm at 140,000+ miles and some vibrations underneath at highway speeds. Reading this post gets me extremely nervous.

I'm in a 99 DI. What visible signs can I look out for to determine my situation? Is this an issue on Disco's w/ no lift?

Al,

Here is a pic of the aft section of the new driveshaft. Notice, no more roto, but instead a nice joint. :-)

I had a driveline vibration around 50+ mph but didn’t hear any noise. I replaced the Roto-flex coupler and the associated bushing (inside the drive shaft end) and the vibration went away. Nathan at discountbritishparts.com sells them with the bushing at a good price.

Why did LR install a roto-flex rather than a u-joint to begin with? "roto-flew" reference, LOL!

Tim - idea behind rotoflex was to reduce noise. It actually works - there is slight noice increase when you replace shaft.

The only problem Iīm facing is that around 30 to 35 mph I get this weird noise under the front end where the drive shaft would be. I donīt feel any vibrations but a noise like something is rubbing with a metal part. I have a 2 inche lift on a XD with 80k. Hopefully someone knows what Iīm talking about.

Peter....go further. What effect does throttle, braking, etc have on the noise?

well it only happens when Iīm going around 30mph. When I give it gas and go over 35mph it goes away, then when I brake down to around 30mph and let off the gas it comes back. What I think is something like an metal sheet piece is rubbing with something. Itīs like when you put a card in a bike spoke and start riding you getting that effect. The dealer said that the front drive shaft is rubbing against the front sway bar and there is a tiny grove there. But I donīt know if this is true. The only thing to do is take off the drive shaft and see if the noise comes back. Hopefully this makes a little sense.

On my D1 with an ARB 2" lift I made spacer plates to lower front sway bar mounts 3/8" to stop scraping.

The front drive shaft is rubbing against the front sway bar. I have a 3" lift on my D1 and I had the same thing. I did not know what the sound was until I went offroad when the rubbing sound became a thump whenever the vehicle jumped. I looked below the vehicle and there was a clear groove on the front drive shaft just above the sway bar and even the grease nipple broke off. I installed a 3 inch steel bracket below the sway bar brackets and the problem was solved.
