I was wondering if guys who wheel with series II discos. Let me add to that discos with modifications done to them. I have seen Paul Morgan's and think it is a sweet truck. I was wondering about likes and dislikes of the trucks with mods. Now that prices are reasonable was thinking of making a switch for a used one.

Aaron,
I have a three inch lift on mine. There is a slight change in the drive, but nothing too bad.

Aaron,
I purchased an '03 with the intensions of modifying it to my liking. So far I have added an OME 2" lift and larger AT tires and am extreemly pleased with the results. I think it drives better with the mods, but it does ride stiffer than stock.

Gary.

"Sherman" and all of his modifications are here: http://houstonlandroverclub.com/mp_bill_mallin.html. The order the mods are listed are the order in which I did them.

My $G rear bumper is ordered and should be here soon.

I'm happy with everything.

As far as the actual truck goes--I do which the ass-end was shorter, but the $G rear should help eliminate damage from dragging the tail.

There are a few other members in the club with modified DIIs also. If you go to the site, check out Micah's, Ken's, & Lances M's rigs.

I've got an 03 as well. I've added under-armor and sliders, TTs front and rear, quick disconnects and a mild OME lift with bigger tires. Love the on-road ride -- way less body roll -- and off road it'll do everything I ask of it.

I was looking at Rovertym 3" lift. standard sliders, Rovertym or Safariguard front bumper winch. I was looking for something that can wheel as good as my RR classic, but a little more modern. Sometimes I feel like the american example of an English redneck in it. I would like something that is a little more modern that can serve as my everyday driver, but also for regular off road use. I was just a little concerned with all the electronics of the new D2 any variations in the years, I know I want one with the cdl, but after that are they all the same until the 4.6?

LEGAL DISCLAIMER: The below statement is based on my personal experience and of those who I wheel with.

Good Morning Aaron,

First off, thanks for the compliment. But looks can be deceiving. Like everything else Rover, one thing leads to another. The Pig is a everyday driver for me, which means I am more anal on keeping up with the maintenance.

I was just a little concerned with all the electronics of the new D2 any variations in the years...

Honestly, the electronics is the one thing I have not had any problems with (knock on wood). ETC is very cool and HDC is a fun way to entertain passengers that normally drive a Series :-) But, these two electronic gizmos do have some side affects. No, not like the purple pill on those TV ads, but with your brakes and diffs. For example:

ETC through the SLABS ECU pumps the hell out of your brakes when activated. This causes even more wear on our already weak braking system. I have a set of rotors and pads on now that have lasted 18K (changed at 30K), but they are looking a bit weak. So I am now looking at upgrading to these:

http://www.dba.com.au/

Also with our wonderful ETC system, our stock LR diffs will take a beating as well. I have three friends in the last 4 months that have had to replace rear diffs. One person in particular had to do it twice. Again knock on wood, but i have been lucky here. I am currently looking at this option:

http://www.tractech.com/

Now combine ETC with CDL with your diff weakness and you will also need to look at these:

https://www.expeditionexchange.com/gbr/

Installing a kick ass diff in your stock LR axle will eventually eat your stock axles. This is up for debate; but some have lasted 1000 miles on stock axles and others have never had a problem. IMHO, if you are going in, then do it all correctly.

I was looking at Rovertym 3" lift.

Once you go 3", you need to think about the propshafts. The front is a POS and the rear still has a flexible rubber coupling which together can cause vibes and or explode. Do a search on vibes in the tech section and you will be amazed how many people have felt the love of the D2 front prop shaft.

This week I installing the GBR front U-joint kit and replacing the rear propshaft assy with a GBR HD shaft. Check out:

http://www.greatbasinrovers.com/

I am not saying to go out and do everything at once!!

Enjoy the D2 and do to it whatever makes you happy. Sure I have a bunch of "stuff" hanging off my truck, but right now I am making the "stuff you don't see" a priority.

There are some D2 folks on this BBS that has really done some nice things to their trucks. Check out:

http://www.discoweb.org/frankrafka/index.htm

http://www.discoweb.org/gregdavis/index.htm

http://www.discoweb.org/ronl/index.htm

http://www.discoweb.org/gregcollins/index.htm

http://www.discoweb.org/george/index.htm

I am happy with the Pig. Yes, there has been some warranty speed bumps along the way, but I have wheeled up as far north as Vermont and South as Georgia and the Pig has always brought me home. I would have no problem jumping in it right now and driving it to Seattle. Good luck on your acquistion.

Now off for some coffee.....

Paul,

I didn't see yours, but Greg Davis's Disco...Just Damn!! Awesome!! His mod to the rear end and the exhaust re-route - very creative.
I'd buy his or have him just mod Disco's. Wow.

Congrats Greg!

Yeah, Greg D's D2 is very nice. But I think the Bad Ass D2 of the year award goes to Frank Rafka. Just my opinion.

I know what you mean Ron. My pics still show the 285's. Those were three sets ago.

Aaron, I've had a ball with my DII. What I like the most is when I wheel with other rigs. Because of its size, not many expect much from it. It's really nice to be able to keep up with most of the rigs on the trail.

As far as the rear overhang; I've never once had it be the cause of a failed attempt. It may get in the way and it has a few bruises on the quarters, but it manages to get through.

let the factory smoke, tryin' to figure out my ABS problem. I was looking for the input votlage from the sensor and POOF!..still tryin' to figure what happened. I spent all day tracing it back to a bad resistor, of course, I need a fucking microscope and pencil iron to fix the fucking thing...Seems I had a bad trace on the board from the edge connector which was causing my problem in the first place. We'll see, I got it to reset so we'll see...I'm goin' to the bar and watching "monster garage"...

Here's the english version...signal from left front abs sensor wasn't making it to the slabs ecu. I was trying to find were it stopped and blew something up in the slabs ecu...I found what I blew up and also found a problem on the motherboard for the slabs ecu. I fixed that, and it seems to be working...

Hey, Paul. Look at my profile. I think you'll like what I did with your old bumper. It's not much, but it's a start.

And let me know when you guys are going out on the trail. It's not too far from Knoxvegas is it?

As for the subject at hand, put on a CDL. It makes a big difference. Plus you don’t have to watch that little yellow light flash on and off all day long.

As for the heavy duty axels, diffs, etc. I'm going to wait until it's either out of warranty or broken. I haven't had any problems so far.

Jamie, snow driving to me is a lot of fun. I had an inpromtu snow drive in the NC mtns a few Saturdays ago when they got about 18"+ up there. Click my profile for a pic at Max Patch mountain. Note the snow on the bumper; that was the height of a few drifts I went thru! :-)

Can't wait for more snow driving and a trip to Blowing Rock.

Greg, truck looks good!

Aaron,

I clicked on your name and looked at your profile pic. That looks cold!!

Re: Blowing Rock: I did a dweb search but didn't come up with anything except for this thread. Then, a few days ago I ventured in to trails/events section (I don't think I've ever been in that section before!) and found Blowing Rock listed. There were a few pics, I'm wondering about this pic in particular, I'll include link to it. I'd like to know if the front tires different from the rear tires in this pic?

www.discoweb.org/blowingrock/aaron.jpg

Hey, I just noticed the pic says aaron.jpg! What kind of tires do you put on your truck for driving in the snow? Those pics looked like some intense driving.

I wonder if they have bunny hills up there in Blowing Rock to learn on?

Of course, first I'd have to make it up there on the bloomin' highway on/in the snow :-(

Hmmm... brainstorm - maybe I could import someone experienced via air to drive up with us?? In anycase, please keep me posted on trip if you guys pull one together - especially via email in case I miss any posts. It would be totally cool to get to meet everyone! Depending on events, I might be more free to leave the area after January.

Just wondering, when you guys do trail rides/road trips in the snow, do you stay in hotels at night??

Thanks, Jamie

Blowing Rock is only a few hours drive for us in Charlotte so we usually do a day trip. But there are hotels in the area if you aren't a winter camper.

Those tires in that link are the BFG MTs I had before going to swampers. The tires in my profile are 245/75 Futura MTs for the street. :-)

I'm no expert on snow driving, but it seems that keeping momentum uphill is important. On that recent drive, I stopped on an uphill section of the road to take a picture, tried to get going again and slid into the ditch numerous times before I was able to continue.

Andy,

OK, I'm game. This I've got to see!! How and where are we going to get the snow???

I just opened your email. I still can't wait until you and Tonya get here!! I'm still guarding my schedule and attempting to keep it totally free for the week you will be here. So far so good!!

Maybe you should grab a few other dweb members to come too - do you have a really big suitcase they could fit into?? :-) Sure wish your dog could come too!! Wouldn't that be a sight? Three dogs herding at once! We've got lots of herding trails in our back yard. No sheep though - my dogs have substituted squirells :-)
