Glad to know there is site like this for Disco owners.

Just picked my new used 98 Disco and spending time with it under the hood. Finding here and there to fix or fine tune; otherwise like the ride on this baby. One of the things I want to fix is the crack exhaust manifold (driver side).

I used search and found size wrench to use for removal (12mm) but didn't find any write-up on how and where to get or aftermarket replacement. Looks pretty easy - unbolt old and in with the new. If anyone has experienced this and can share how, where you found replacement, and cost, I would appreciate.

Also I live in Berkeley, CA (94804) and if you have used one and willing to sell, let me know.

I searched the web and found Land Rover parts dealer selling it for $200 plus tax and gaskets.

Used ones can be warped, you will break studs and once it is done it is worth it. I had both sides taken off and welded back together $150.00.

Cracked manifolds are common - sorry to hear you ended up with one, though. I also did what Charles did, and had both sides welded when they cracked. That worked fine.

I just recieved a letter from Land Rover of North America regarding a LAND ROVER SERVICE ACTION CAMPAIGN B112 - EXHASUT MANIFOLD INSPECTION AND REPAIR. The letter states that Land Rover has determined that certain 1997 and 1998 model Land Rover vehicles have right side exhaust manifolds subject to premature cracking. The cracks allow exhaust gases to be emitted into the under hood area resulting in increasd noise levels.

In short Land Rover will pay for this repair. I hope this helps you!

I had both left and right manifolds crack at seperate times. The first was replaced by the dealer at no cost. The second, I had welded up for $40 and is holding up just fine. I figured since it relieved itself by cracking, it should'nt crack at the same place as the weld. I just wonder how long will the "new" manifold last compared to the welded one now. My gut feeling is that the new one the dealer installed will eventually crack as well.

Ron,, I have a Driverside manifold available if you want it. I'm in Sacramento, if you stop by, you can just pick it up.

Thank Tbow! How much do you want for it?

I've been busy with work and now have the weekend to spend time with my Disco.

Called my local Land Rover dealership this morning regarding possible repair coverage; waiting for response.

The seller also emphatized with me and promised to get replacement but have not heard back (2 weeks now). I have thse two directions to go and just waiting. If all doesn't pan out, my third option is to get it myself. I will contact you and arrange to pick-up exhaust manifold. Thx for the offer!

Ron

Also want to thank others for their feedback!

Ron,
Just replace it with a new one. If you simply weld the old mainifold, you still have an old, worn out part that has a bandaid on it. It will eventuall crack somewhere else because it is old and weak. By replacing it all at once, you're sure to get several years without having to worry about it cracking again and they are a big pain in the ass to change. That is one part you definitely don't want to have to change out ever. Accessing the studs are tight and you have to have the right tools and lots of patience. Careful not to break the studs but just in case, you should have some extras as stand bys. Don't forget to change the gaskets too. Don't use the old ones but it is okay to reuse the retaining clips if they are not broken. I bought a new manifold from Roversnorth for about $175. I think Roverconnection.com has them cheaper...$146 maybe. Check it out! Used ones are always warped and are difficult to mount and seal correctly...and they will crack sooner than new ones. So if you are going to do the job once, make it last and go for the new one. No offense to the welded folks. To each his own.

Ed

My local dealership got back to me, and you are right Ira. My 98 is entitled to (not all 98s) exhaust manifold replacement. Service advisor plugged in my VIN# in their computer and it showed service/repair avail. Dealer at Land Rover Marin, CA is picking the bill. Felt good about this one!

While I was waiting for the dealer to open (I was there early), I replaced the rear bumper aux light bulb in the parking lot. Funny, I took the whole housing out and it turned out to be twist and turn thing. Didn't have to remove the housing. Oh well, you live and learn.

Anyway, when I get my Disco back from the dealership in couple of days, I am going to work on 2nd item on my list - leak in the wiper fluid reserv otherwise I am happy camper! 3rd item(s)are mild build-up when funds become avail (slowly but surely) e.g. rear locker, 1-2" spacer lift, heavy duty front bumper, and larger AT or MT tires. This should do for me awhile as a daily driver and weekend off-roader! See yah in Hollister, CA soon!

Brad, yes - my attempt for a new snorkel mod - right above/near the air intake! He! He!

That particular snorkel is avail at your local Starbucks (just imagine Starburks extending their line of products....a cup of coffee and and four 2" alum spacers to go please).

I placed the coffee on my hood (oh no! - actually was no longer hot just warm) to snap pic of my 18mo old son. He just loves being on the driver side of his daddy's disco!

And as happy as his daddy since didn't have to pay for replacing exhaust manifold! Now with an excuse to use money otherwise spent on manifold for mods e.g. 2" spacer and so forth!

Well, got the 98 disco back from the dealer, and happy to see new manifold installed (see pic). Thumbs up for Marin Land Rover. Noise level is reduced. Thanks everyone for the feedback.

I'll keep in eye on the manifold for future crack. Probably not going to see crack happen in the life time of the Disco under my ownership. I normally keep my rigs for only up to 3-5 years. Who knows - so far I like the Disco. My 96 Jeep Cherokee is the longest suv owned so far (bought it new) and still have it. Happy trails!New Manifold

Also correction: I originally posted driver side exhaust but it's the passenger side that was cracked and finally replaced!
