I noticed that the engine oil level drops after a few weeks on replacing it. Well I went under my '99 D1. Initially I thought the oil drain valve was loose but not the case. Instead I noticed theres a black cover on the bottom of the engine. Don't know what it's called but looks like a casing that protects the bottom of the engine and there are oil droplet's oozing from this unit. Any ideas what's really happening? 99% of the time every problem on my disco is new for me and any suggestions are always greatly appreciated. Thanks - PGK |

You could have a bad oil sump gasket. From what it sounds like, you're describing the oil sump. One thing you can do, is wipe it down as best you can. Try to get all the oil off, and then check to see where it shows up again a few hours later. This will tell you where it's coming from atleast. Rovers are notorious leakers. Matt |

Is this what you're talking about? Directly above the axle breather tube. |

Matt you're right on the money. That's the black box I was talking about. I'm thinking of using oven degreaser spray to clean up the whole thing and see where it's leaking from. Ok now I have a stupid question: Is changing the oil sump gasket an easy thing to do or do I have to take it to a shop? |

I would recommened taking it to a shop. You need to have the 2 mating surfaces flat and clean. The bolts have to be torqued down properly, and in a certain pattern too. In the end, it would probably be easier for a Rover mechanic to do it. That way you won't have to worry about doing this in your driveway with parts all over the place. Matt p.s. I don't think your question was stupid at all. This is what Dweb is for, to ask questions. Give it some time, and you'll know more than you ever thought possible about your Rover. |

Yeah, good thing about winter, it slows down the leaks! |
