What a bunch of W@nkers! If you really have to shoot a lion it should be one shot one kill - but this guy should of bought a Nikon instead of an H&H - looking at that vid they hit the poor sod once so he was in pain and quite rightfully p1$$ed. I have no problems with hunting or guns but do the job right or not at all. And in the case of lions - don't do it at all. JMHO Jeff |

I do not know these people, but it looks like they were hunting on a animal farm or game reserve. Watching the vid, one word comes to mind: DARWINISM Look closely at 1:12 into the video. It's amazing that these morons did not shoot each other as the Lion ran by. |

What a bunch of dumbasses. Personally I would have liked to see the lion connect. I am not a hunter of sort and especially trophy. If it's not for food or for survival, then I am against it. Kill all the dear you want, all the turkeys no problem there. I think some hunting is very important for population control. In that case for dumbass control I was hoping the lion would win, so the dumbasses wouldn't have off spring. Now all we can hope is that they are too fucking stupid to find the right hole. |

That PH is a complete amateur. what is this: "take him! take him! No, wait. Wait. Wait. Take him! No, wait." ??? They seemed to be undergunned for any classic five African game. I'd guess 7mm mag or 30-06 rather than .375 H&H or above. Not to mention understyled. Shooting Lions from a magazine fed rifle! Pah! |

I dont think he was using a magnum round, even on video they have a little more authority then that. A 30/06 has been used to kill about every animal on the planet but someone with aim was using it when they did it. And from the looks of that guy and needing a bi-pod I think a 375 H&H would put him on his ass. -leo |

Nope , shot was late and skipped off his shoulder. "Aim" is a funny thing when you are sitting there behind a monitor and not staring at something that can eat you... I think all said and done that the guides handled it. You see how fast that Animal closed the gap and they managed to get a few rounds in him anyway and left the client without holes in him... Thats why they call them "dangerous game" Kyle "Blow me"

sad video The guides did handle it, and luckily they can shoot. It is not easy to stand your ground in such a situation. But they did not do their job and ensure that the clients were properly equiped. Those little rifles are not the answer. I also think the guides gave them poor direction when choosing a shot. Then again, it is always difficult to determine exactly what happened when looking at it on video. John |

There is an article in this month's Outside magazine about Timothy Treadwell that lives with the grizzlies every summer in AK. Scientists, park Rangers, and friends all warned him that he was getting to close. Just weeks after he wrote his buddy a letter stating he was "accepted" into the group of Grizzlies, he was killed. He and his girlfriend was found by the pilot of a food & supply laden Cessna 206. It was the last run of the summer before Timothy went home. But the pilot found the two completely ripped apart. Infact, even the younger grizzlys were eaten by the elders. Two days later, One of the bears was shot by local authorities and a later autopsy found human body parts in the bear's intestines. Moral of the story: Don't fuck with Lions or Bears. |

Here is what one of my friends e-mailed me about a recent bear attack, I think this was the bear that ate the couple: "The following pictures are of a man who works for the Forest Service in Alaska. He was out deer hunting and a large world record Grizzly charged him from about 50 yards away. The guy unloaded a 7mm Mag Semi-auto into the bear and it dropped a few feet from him. The bear was still alive so he reloaded and capped it in the head. It was over. One thousand six hundred pounds, and 12' 6" high at the shoulder. It's a world record. The bear had killed a couple of people. Of course, the game department did not let him keep it. Think about it. This thing on its hind legs could walk up to the average single story house and look onto the roof at eye level. A basketball rim stands 10 feet from the floor. That means the bears shoulders would be two feet above the rim and its head would look over the backboard...Wow!"

well it wasn't much of a "stalk". a little more experience and discipline would have provided a much better shooting lane. BTW, you know it was a preserve shoot and not a rough shoot because the PH is carrying a game rifle instead of an AK or FAL. |

Alan, I received that email too. Wanting to know more I checked into the story. As told in the email it was an urban legend, pictures from a hunt with a made up story to go with it. As for the two in Alaska, I remember reading that the authorities found that a camcorder have been turned on during that attack. It was in a case so audio only. It stated that it starts out with the woman telling the man to play dead, followed a little later with the man screaming at the woman to hit the bear. The tape ran out before the attack was over, it was described as disturbing and haunting. Authorities killed a bear over the bodies and another that was stalking them. As for the video, well its not for me to criticize others choices. If someone wants to spend their money to shoot a lion in an enclosed pen so be it. Still say you have to give the guy credit for standing his ground. The first two shots missed; if not for the third from a few feet away that guy was had. And I dont think the mauling would have hurt any less because they were in a pen. As for the guns, maybe they should have been using on of these. http://www.serveroptions.com/humor/mex.mpg |

Even things up a little I say. Give the hunters a big knife or a spear, and then let them have a go, especially with such an animal as a lion. It also amazes me how someone can feel so satisfied being able to out-smart a fish with a hook, or a deer by hiding in a tree with a big gun and waiting for one to wander by! Jump on the damn thing Rambo style - THAT would be a challenge |

I will stand with my original comments. I can't imagine a few thousand dollars helping the Continent of Africa. Hell a few thousand dollars can't even touch all the mods I want to do to my Rover. I just think that the clip shows a little unprofessionalism on the guides part. Next time they will be hunting at the zoo from behind the fence so the shooter is safe. What they should have done was got in a defender 110 and shot at him. At least with their poor marksmanship they could have ran over the lion. Then a few thousand dollars for Africa, and 30K lbs for England. Plus they wouldn't have spilled their beers. |

you can argue what you want about what they should have done to prevent the situation. the fact remains the situation occured and it was dealt with. i dont think i would have had the balls to stand my ground with that lion coming at me at mach 2 and keep shooting it near the head in hopes that it will die. once that animal comes to attack me my logic begins to fade and panic replaces it. i think the shooter panicked pretty well. rd

Cool clip. I don't see why everyone but Kyle seems to be calling these guys morons. I'm no Peter Capstick, but it didn't look that bad to me. Perhaps the client's first shot didn't get kitty in the K-zone. Perhaps the client was undergunned. Perhaps the Pro should have flattened simba during the charge. Perhaps the Pro should have had his Holland's .577 Nitro loaded with with softs and crumpled simba with with the second shot after his first shot didn't didn't stop simba in his tracks. Blah blah blah. But it didn't look like a clusterfuck or anything, at least not from my way of looking at things. Probably the worst part of it was the multiple misses when kitty was down, and I'm not even sure those were misses. It's so hard to tell in that video. If you guys think it's so easy to crumple a charging lion, I can't believe you guys even wheel. Even the best wheeling would be boring by comparison I would think.

Exactly , I do think thier were two "Mistakes" made , if you can call them that. The first one was the clients , he should have passed on the shot when he couldnt make it in time to get the broad side shot. Instead , he didnt and you can see the round skip off the cats shoulder knocking him on his ass. The second was on the guides part (from my perspective) by not nailing the cat once they saw that his head was up (If they could indeed see that). Keep in mind that shot was taken at a fair distance and there is grass and all kinds of crap in the way. Also take into consideration that they are sitting and observing. You can believe they know god damned good and well that if they screw up they quite possibly could end up being snacked on. Sometimes those things , and the adreneline that comes with of the whole situation force you to do the exact things you are trying to avoid. Its not static and niether are the animals. Its not going to go the same way every time and thats exactly why there are MILLIONS (Not thousands Aaron) made in the industry every year. Call the guides and the client what you want. The guide was there to Kill a Lion and experience the thrill. Mssion accomplished. The guides were there to get this guy intoa postion to kill a Lion and make sure that he doesnt get killed in the process , again , Mission accomplished . No , it wasnt perfect and the guy didnt sit in a perfectly safe steel box while he took his shot but thats what we call hunting... What would you call the guy that went head to head with one of those 30 years ago carrying only a double barrled rifle ? Kyle "Blow me"

A friend showed me those same pictures of that huge bear, and he also had a picture of one of the guys that it ate. They were pretty gory. The legs were bone with a little bit of muscle hanging on them. "There is an article in this month's Outside magazine about Timothy Treadwell that lives with the grizzlies every summer in AK. Scientists, park Rangers, and friends all warned him that he was getting to close. Just weeks after he wrote his buddy a letter stating he was "accepted" into the group of Grizzlies, he was killed." Well, he didn't favor a double because his work was dirty and the double's action wouldn't close when there was the smallest amount of dirt on the breech flats. He didn't favor a heavy. He didn't even favor a medium. But WDM Bell may well be the greatest hunter of all time, and the majority of his kills were executed with a little Rigby's 7mm Mauser with 173-grain solids. "On subsequent safaris, Bell learned to vale two qualities of the modern high-power rifle: weight and accuracy. Its light weight enabled him to carry his own weapon all day, until it became an extension of his arm, and he could raise and use it with effortless steadiness. Its accuracy made even the small bullets deadly, if properly aimed. To perfect the steadines of his aim, Bell performed endless drills with his rifle extended in one hand. Soon he learned that a small-bore rifle is reliable only with a brain shot [this is in respect to shooting elephants], for the heart and lungs can absorb more punishment and take longer to bring the body down. To perfect his targeting, he studied the anatomy of the elephant as no hunter ever had before. "Sawing an elephant skull in two with a nine-foot, two-handed bandsaw, Bell studied the brain and its shelter of honeycomboned bone. The cellular skull structure, later used in modern aircraft frames, combines strength with light weight, permitting the elephant's neck to support the huge head and heavy tusks. Carefully Bell assessed the relative vulnerability of the different routes to this target, learned the precise angles that give sure access to the elephant's ten-pound brain, roughly the size of a loaf of bread. "Practising in the field until his "subconscious aimer" took over, he used the ear root and the eye to plot the location of the brain. To do the job quickly and cleanly, with less pain to the animal and more safety for the hunter, he got in close, thirty yards, and aimed always for the brain itself. The alternative was more dangerous. In thick thorn bush, when a man can barely move, a six-ton elephant cuts through like an icebreaker, covering a hundred yards in ten or eleven seconds. "Proud of the finality and silence of his technique, Bell knew "nothing more satisfying than the complete flop of a running elephant shot in the brain." In this way Karamojo Bell, using various rifles, killed over a thousand elephant in twenty years of hunting, covering over 60,000 miles on foot from Abyssinia to Liberia." ---Bartle Bull, Safari: A Chronicle of Adventure WDM Bell could purportedly use his "subconcious aimer" to hit the elephant's brain from almost any angle. Even an elephant running away from him was vulnerable to a brain shot. Elephants' heads flop back and forth as they run, and elephants frequently look back as they run. Bell would wait for such a moment and when the elephant turned its head, Bell pulled the trigger on a perfectly aimed shot and the elephant crumpled to the brain shot. This is field shooting at its best. Here is a man who used his brain and great skill instead of horsepower and still got the job done. Elegantly. Though most of Bell's fellow professional ivory hunters died in the field, Bell lived to see his retirement in Scotland.

First where the hell does Blue come up with all these pics to match topics so damn fast. Second Kyle I understand that there are millions made doing this every year, I think Paul made valid points, being that they had poor control of the situation including gun control. Similiar things happen hunting ducks and pheasants all the time. I also think the guide is the most to blame. If the customer can afford to pay for the trip the guide's job is to provide the necessary safety precautions along with the hunt. I noticed he was telling the customer when to shoot versus not to shoot. Another thing I notice are fences. I have never been to Africa to know for sure but obviously it is some kind of Game ranch, that's why I made the comment of shooting from the truck. This is the same thing the business people did in the 1800's they shot buffalo from a train and enjoyed their lunch, not much sport or hunting just slaughter. Webster's dictionary definition of hunting. 1 a : to pursue for food or in sport b : to manage in the search for game 2 a : to pursue with intent to capture b : to search out : SEEK 3 : to drive or chase especially by harrying 4 : to traverse in search of prey It looks more to me like showing up at the local cattle ranchers and shooting a cow. Not much to hunt, just don't miss. Oh yeah and Rob I think you would have been fine, who knows how to react in that situation. I think that looking back they all know the messed up and are lucky. Dumbasses 1-0 Lions 0-1 can't wait for the rematch. |

quote:John, The thing that alarmed me the most was when Simba rolled through the middle of the group. Then all the guns were pointing at each other. No gun control
this is where i am all for crazy shooting and guns pointed everywhere. i'd much rather get shot while trying to bring down the lion than let the thing eat me
quote:"Proud of the finality and silence of his technique, Bell knew "nothing more satisfying than the complete flop of a running elephant shot in the brain." In this way Karamojo Bell, using various rifles, killed over a thousand elephant in twenty years of hunting, covering over 60,000 miles on foot from Abyssinia to Liberia."
thems where the days when it was noble to kill a thousand elephants. -rob

I think it is unfair to judge Bell and his contemporaries by today's standards. Times change, as do social and moral standards. In Bell's day, the elephant population was perceived as endless, and professional elephant hunting was perfectly legitimate work. No such professional hunting of elephants really exists today. Probably the only professional hunting of elephants that remains is by game rangers to thin some herds in overpopulated areas to prevent a crash decline and to kill the occasional rogue. Both practices are perfectly legitimate by today's standards. Bell's ivory hunting was just as legitimate 100 years ago.

I actually think those guys exercised good gun control. The two dudes in the background did violate a cardinal rule by covering their compadres with their rifles (at least one of the background guys did this), but the damn lion charged through the middle of the group...when the shit hits the fan like that, shit happens. The good gun control comes into play when the background guy(s) refrained from shooting their friends and only shot at the lion when he was in the clear (behind the group). Then the guide makes the kill once the lion is in the clear in front of the group. Still, the whole affair plays out for the camera like one big moronic clusterfuck, in my opinion. You have to appreciate the irony in that vid clip...the table turns on Safari Bob & friends. And John is right about judging the past by today's standards. When we do that, we end up with even more moronic behavior, like re-writing history books. |

OK, I agree with that Rob. I never said that I thought elephant hunting was reasonable or commendable. In fact, I don't. But if I lived 75 years ago, perhaps I'd think differently. Who can say? I was simply saying that we shouldn't condemn the guy because he killed a shitload of elephants in his day. In retrospect, what he was doing was detrimental to the overall future of the elephant population, but he apparently didn't know that. If he knew it and didn't give a shit, then he sounds like a jerk, or maybe just a capitalist making some ivory bucks. I also disagree with the practices of the Aztecs in the 15th & 16th centuries. They thought that their gods needed to be constantly rejuvenated via human sacrifice. I think it's wrong to yank out some poor schmuck's beating heart and then impale his or her head on a stake and make a suit out of their skin. But that's me talking in 2003. Do you think that we should purge the history books of all references to Presidents owning slaves?

Seems that we can endlessly de-construct our own history and find fault with any event and anyone. I have often quoted Thomas Jefferson, who was arguably America's ultimate patriot. He, along with George Washington, also owned slaves, a regretable detail of our shared history. Does that make him less honorable as an icon for America? It certainly might change your perspective, and willingness to accept him as a hero, if you aren't of European lineage. It would be lamentable if we didn't learn a few things along the way from one generation to the next, and make changes toward a likeness that future historians might consider to be acceptable, reasonable or commendable. Although many people try to better themselves through their lives, there are a bonehead few who seem hellbent on reverting instead. I'm not entirely certain where those "hunters" fit into the picture. e |

What are you guys talking about slaves. E.L.F and the Sierra club all think we are sinners for driving our gas guzzling SUVs and don't mention off roading. So I agree with Blue, in 50 years we might look back and wonder why we drove vehicles that get 12mph gallon and leave a perpetual oil slick everywhere they go. lota pussies here today. I watched that over and over and I didnt see anything wrong with what people did. at the start when the guide was saying "wait wait" . "now take him" "now wait" he was instructing the shooter to a Quartering away shot. if you look at the first shot it was taken at almost the perfect moment of quartering away. This position allows for the single plane of the projectile the most access to the vital organs with the lowest likelyhood of hitting a bony structure to deflect the shot. the fact that he was going so fast is a testament to the level of presure and reaction time hunting dangerous game at short range on the ground can bring. as it looked like to me after the firt shot the Lion was still obscured in the bush, a rookie would have been shooting then. they were waiting for a clear final shot. when the lion started to close they fired as it cleared the bush. then the guide stopped shooting to deflect the lion with the barrel of his gun. if you watch the slow-mo he looks to have stunned the lion as its mouth opens on his barrel and stays that way as it flies thru the group. as mentioned above nobody started cross shooting they waited for the lion to clear the group. sorry guys but sounds like only a couple get it. Thats hunting large strong animals. I have been on anumber of Bear hunts that had some very tense moments. Thats why people sport hunt. and as long as the powers that be use sport hunting as a means of population control and revenue generation thats how it will continue to be. when all you see is the kill censored stuff on espn and other cable shows it removes the blatent reality that as much as you think you are in control with your realtree camo and large caliber rifles the unexpected can always happen. You can't expect to wield supreme executive power just because some watery tart threw a sword at you... If I went around saying that I was an emperor just because some moistened bint lobbed a scimitar at me, they'd put me away... Come and see the violence inherent in the system... Help! I'm being repressed! So we should thank the French for communist Viet Nam, and congratulate ourselves on the genocide of the American Indians, Wicks, You really ought to read some of Eckert's works regarding the Iroqouis.... I have to admit, I really don't feel sorry for the Native Americans anymore. Problem is, we've all been taught revisionist history about the "noble savage" for so long, we don't remember what it was like at the time.... -L

Leslie, I'm a neophyte at best on the subject, but I am aware that some of the tribes were hostile. In my view it has never convinced me that the settling of (read invasion of) their lands was fair. Of course, without the British Empire's aggessions, or "deeds", around the world, would ESL still be the most common language class in North American universities? It's a mess no matter which way you cut it. ;) Our world is led by very charming thieves, rapists and murderers. The test is to be willing to disagree. |

their lands? who's land? the tribe on the spot at the time or the tribe that is now dead and gone because the current population killed them when their land was not fruitful enough so they moved up river, down river of across a plain to where there was what they needed so they then killed the current inhabitants and took the land they needed. |

Lands were taken from one group by another in the Americas since the first people migrated here from Siberia some 20,000 years ago. The "indigenous" civilizations were well-versed in the art of domination by force and subjugation through religion and sacrifice long before the Spanish or Northern Europeans made landfall. |

Not to throw fuel on the fire - but lands all over the world have been conquered and re-conquered since the beginning of time - look at the history of Britain - Vikings, Romans, Saxons, Normans etc etc. to put it bluntly - shit happens - and its these events that weave the intricate patterns of history. Of course I'm still waiting for the reaparations from the Italians for the time that they invaded England and stole our lands and put the Britons into slavery and fed us to the lions - (nice little segway back into the thread) JMHO |
