Could all the discowebers pool there thoughts together and finally find a way to seal a petrol engine from water? Besides the air intake, i"m talking about the electrical systems and spark plugs etc. My 88 Rangie doesn't like swimming to say the least, my engine ALWAYS dies. In a few seconds, sometimes minutes, it starts again, but it's a pain in my a**. Any thoughts on how to seal it all up?? |

Follow the link from the thread "Your Rover Fix for the Day" - they talk a little about what was done to keep the water out. |

seal the distributor with a surgeon's rubber glove or the like and dielectic grease on all boots, both ends and the gap where the dist cap meets the base. My water issues always start and end with the dizzy. Maybe build a tupperware container to hold it airtight and then build one for the ecu just incase it comes in the cab. Plastic sheet over front grill helps too as does the bow wave. If all fails , dry it out with wd-40 and hope the engine is warm and the sun is shining to dry it up. |

The biggest enemy I have found for my Rover is Mud (water) pits. They are a blast to go through -- especially if you can create huge waves of water -- but a pain for all the problems it creates. My first experience cost me an alternator. Mud/water also got into my air breather and I'm still sorting out electrical/fuel ignition related problems. It may have ruined the MAF (Mass Air flow Meter) which is about $400+ USED :-( The fix is a diesel engine. I'm saving all of my pennies for a diesel engine out of one of the Brits MOD's that are being imported. For $5-7,000 one could be purchased and installed. Once done, no more electrics to deal with. Till then, by a can of Dri-Wire from your local parts store. It's better than WD-40 and made for the application you describe. It is made by the folks at Gunk. |

someone told me recently to put a silicone bead of calk on the seat of the distributor cap. Wait until it has almost completely hardens an then mount the cap. Have you replaced your distributor cap recently? |

I havn't replaced it, but cleaned the contacts. I think the distributer i can get sealed, but i don't think that it's the problem. WHen the distributer gets wet, it runs rough and eventually dies (this i do all the time). So i looked at it and noticed my fuel advance was hagning out the the side leaving a huge whole in the distributer. That was that problem. now i'm going through water and the engine immediately quits. Give it about 20- 30 seconds and it fires up again like it just walked out of hte show room. What is causing that? |
