I installed a 3" Rovertym lift on my '03 Disco about a month ago. This weekend I was in Austin and my ABS, Brake, TC and Hill Descent Warning lights all came on. I pulled over into a parking lot and looked under the hood. The ABS extension line I had installed melted through and grounded itself, probably againsted the inside wheel well. First off, let me say this has happened before. And, please no sarcastic remarks like maybe I should have someone else install the ABS extensions :-). Actually, that may not be a bad idea. Anyway, I cut out the melted portion of the line, stripped the two wires and reconnected them. I wrapped the reconnected wires in electrical tape, reconnected the ABS extension and took the Disco to Land Rover of Austin. They tried to reset the computer for me, but they said it was still reading a fault where I had tried my "quick fix". I have ordered a new ABS extension and plan on replacing it with my old one as soon as it comes in.

So, here's my question. Can I reset my own computer once I install the new ABS line? I was hoping disconnecting the battery would reset my computer, that way I don't have to go into the dealer. Technically, the dealer can charge me an hour's labor to reset my computer. They haven't so far, but you never know.

Thanks.

Justin...the answer is NO. It really sucks, on some vehicles you can re-set the abs computer by disconnecting the battery. Not a Rover. Also, u can't do it with a generic odb-2 reader. The codes are rover specific...

Justin,
I had the same problem with my ABS that took about 4 or 5 trips to the dealer. My ABS wire was shortening out on my front axle because when they replaced the hub, they didn't snap the ABS line into the "C" clips.

I kept getting a hard fault. It pissed me off because they couldn't find out what the problem was. I ended up finding the short when I replaced the rotors. Then another trip back to the shop and it was fixed.

Basically if you get a "hard-fault" you can't reset it. It must be done with the Test Book at the dealer.

Hi Bazzle,

Sorry,

I do not have any super secret information that I am trying to hide, I just wanted to let Justin know that I was shipping him a new ABS extension and give him the link to my online store so he could order more in the future if he needed.

Thanks,

Dave Lucas

I just got my ABS extension. I installed it and planned on having to take the Disco into the dealer to have them reset the ABS, hill descent control, hand Brake and the traction control. All of these quit working when I grounded the ABS line on the wheel well. (See post above for an accident related to my own stupidity!) Anyway, I thought I would try to disconnect the battery after I put the new ABS extension in just to see if it would reset the computer. IT DID!!!! All of the function's lights turned off, and I tested the hand brake and hill descent control. Both of them worked. I haven't tested the traction control or the ABS, but the lights are off. So, unhooking the battery appears to have reset the functions.

I plan on going into the dealer Saturday to make sure everything is working properly.

FWIW.

Doesn't ABS do a self test when you start rolling?
(My faults have cleared after starting and driving around after a fix...)

It depends on the code, I've been playing a game with mine, and finally after finding a problem on the motherboard of SLABS ECU, I couldn't get the fucking thing to reset. In some cases, u need to run a diagonstic from TestBook, to reset the SLABS ECU. I finally bought the Rovacom Lite software, and was able to reset the SLABS ECU. So I guess what i'm saying is that if it's a 'soft' fault, it will reset without even disconnecting the battery. If it's a 'hard" fault, the diagonstic needed to be run from either TestBOok or the Rovacom software...sorry for the long winded response...
