The oil pump went out on my '96 disco while going up a grade, I actually heard the engine knocking and began to pull over before the pressure light came on. I've started tearing down the engine and have found oil in the coolant and metal shavings in the oil pan which causes me to believe I need a new engine. I can't afford the $6,500 dealer replacement and have allready come up empty handed at the wrecking yards. We love our rovers, but this is our second disco to loose an engine before 100k, and they are well maintained. The first was due to a sticky valve striking the piston, only 4 months ago. We're still in college so not a lot of cash. If anyone has any advice, please let me know. Also might be interested if anyone has any info on an engine conversion. Thanks!

Hi Ryan - sory to hear about your misfortunes - engines for these are never fun when they go wrong. There are a number of options you could go with depending on the desired end result - of course the easiest is the direct replacement but finding good salvage units sounds like its been a challenge - you could try

britrest.com up in canada
and roverland in FL.

As far as engine conversions go this in general is a more costly route than even the dealer replacement - the ones I know of are -

200/300 TDI - of course
Ford v6 essex
Nissan|Isuzu diesels
various domestic V8's - mostly involving removing the transmission and transfer case

There are quite a few sites based in the UK that do these types of conversions

top of my head I think Samuri Ltd probably do the most.

Hope that helps

Jeff

And this time, quit running Sun-Lube chainsaw oil.

LOL Eric, I'm Lead lube and tire tech at a Goodyear Gemini store, since I've owned it, the last 30,000 miles, she's gotten shell synthetic, but I'll remember your advice!
