You can drive over the lava on the big island, from the east side. You can go quite close to the lava outlet into the sea. Shitloads of grip too!

I'm going in March to do some open water seaplane training, so I'd like to know too. It's a shame we're missing each other by a month Sean.

There are cheap flights out there now, so join the the band wagon Chad.

Dean,

"You can drive over the lava on the big island, from the east side. You can go quite close to the lava outlet into the sea. Shitloads of grip too!"

Are you sure you are not thinking of the Big Island - Hawaii? I do not know of any active volcanos on Oahu.

Curtis - yes, that's right. Which is why I said "big island" :-)

Its only a short cheap flight there from Oahu, and there are quite a few places to go off road if you can rent a rover for a few days. Damn I wish I could take my own disco there!

Dean/Curtis/Ron-Sorry for the HA/HI confusion. I'll look into the "short cheap flight" option. Thanks for the tip.

Ian-That sounds awesome(sea plane training). Unfortunately we won't be there at the same time.

Chad-Come on, you can go.

Any local rover owners on the board, or anybody know any?

I just returned from the Big Island. No rovers to rent (when I was there). In addition, most of the agencies have a policy against taking renters into the lava fields. I can't say that I obeyed this rule. Had a blast.

I just got back from Oahu, visiting some family. To be honest, I don't know of any place to wheel over there that is 100% legal. The island is pretty small, and most of it is privately owned. The bits of it that are public land, such as the water shed aread up against the mountains are so steep that I'd doubt you could go far in a 4x4.

There is a small area out by Kaena Point. If you head out there from the Haleiwa side you'll find it at the end of the road. But the part that looks legal is pretty small.

If you have to get a four wheeling fix, try going out to Kualoa Ranch. It's a large 3000 or so acre ranch (lots of movies are shot there) where you can rent out an ATV or buggie and drive around. I've never done it so can't vouch for how fun it is or how much it might suck...

It's kind of funny though because you see so many trucks out there with big lifts and running Super Swamper Bogger tires, but I think it's mostly "poser" factor.

Thanks,
Nathan Hindman
