To make a long story short. I took my D1 in for a check because the engine light came on, and lo and behold i need a valve job and the head gasket is leaking. of course the warranty expired two weeks ago, and the factoy won't do anything. I feel like this will be the start of a long road of problems with the engine. I know it can be fixed but i dont waant to have to worry about it everytime i get in the truck. Does that make sense. What should i do.

well if the warrenty expired two weeks ago i'd go in and tell them to fix it anyway, thier charge. if it was bad today then surely it was bad two weeks ago. go to the manager and up the chain and complain , but not so harshly as to become the asshole. just pleade your case again and again.

mention that they could easily claim it was on appointement to get fixed just before the warrenty to get fixed and now the truck is past that time, they will get payed from Land Rover anyway.

tell them that this says alot about there dealership and how they treat customers. Then mention how you will never buy a car from them again and advise your friends and anyone else who will listen to ever buy a car from them.

play hard ball.

Rob I don't believe in that. I always think they have got you by the balls, and they can so easily fuck you over by 'adjusting' something else that will fail a few months down the road. Like a bit of sand in the transmission, or a slit seal or something. I dont think there's such a thing as an honest mechanic, and that include rover's.

Now bribery, that would be different....:-)

Was this a D1 under new car warranty? If so it's one of the very last ones . . . If it's an extended warranty, you're all done. You simply decide to pay the money and fix the vehicle, or get rid of it.

If it is new car warranty I would call Land Rover customer relations. They will send you back to the dealer, where you should get a chance to argue your case to the rep.

If you are a second owner with no history at the dealer you are still probably on your own.

Ford is (as a rule) pretty strict on warranty. Every purchaser of a new Ford family (Jag, Mazda, LR, Volvo, Ford, Lincoln, Mercury) vehicle has the chance to buy an extended warranty while the original coverage was in force. If they decline, they made a decision to allow coverage to stop on whatever date it ended. The customer assumed the risk, despite being offered an alternative.

Dealers do have goodwill budgets, but they tend to use them to support good customers. It sounds from your description like they do not put you in that group.

Our company writes Ford-backed extended warranty, and we service vehicles under these policies. So I'm pretty familiar with them. Moving ahead from here, you could fix your truck and buy extended warranty to protect you in the future. Our web site has information on Ford-backed EasyCare policies in the service department area - www.robisonservice.com

I am getting it fixed although not by the dealer. I dont think that i can trust them at this point. I wont be takeing it back for the oil changes that are free for the life of the car.

I had to have a valve job and had a leaky head gasket on my '98 DI. By the way where are you located and what year DI?

The reason for this problem (excuse) I got was this was a common occurance in the Southeast, temp. humidity blah, blah, blah,. They even told me they had done some of these outside of warranty b/c Land Rover said it was a problem specific to the region.

Adam,
You all get free oil changes for the life of the car?
All I got to say is wow.
Wished we had that. All we got were the first 50,000miles.
But then I would still be paying for the oil at $6.00 a quart. But if the dealer would do the labor for free.
What dealer is it by the way.

Concerning dealerships....I owned another 4x4 brand that needed warranty work and I brought it to the local dealership. They could not get me in for a service appointment for 5 days and my warranty had only 350 miles left on it. Unfortunately I had to go out of town the next day and I knew I would be out of warranty when returning a week later. Even though they diagnosed it within the warranty period and THEY could not get me right in, they still refused to pay for the repairs when I returned. They even had suggested I rent a car at my expense. IMO that's why large dealerships (in general) have a bad reputation, the are unreasonable. It's really too bad because it sure seemed like an easy situation to me. They could have gained a new customer but blew it.
