My alternator had been making a bearing noise for about 2 mos now and in the middle of a fun trip deep into a WI state forest through 20" of nice powdery snow to find the ultimate Clark Griswold of a christmas tree sure enough the tach dropped to zero and the little battery icon started to glow bright red.

so being the devote Dweb guy I knew that my good old Alternator had shit the bed and I was 360 miles from home. well we cut a nice huge tree loaded it up and headed back to our cabin ...no problem plenty of juice. knowing I wasent going to like what i was going to hear I called around to find that the local rebuilder had never done a land rover alternator and that he didnt even show a 3.9 litre in any toyota in 94:-)

so unwilling to pay napa's price and wait till monday I decided to head home...

heres what I found

1)on a standard 875 CCA lead acid battery at 70MPH and nothing on(no radio/fan/blower) my disco went 125 miles from full charge to dead.

2) the ABS dash light comes on 5 miles short of when there is no longer enough juice to run the engine/pump/ECU...ect ect...nice warning to get outa the fast lane:-)

3)a 475 CCA deep cycle trolling battery went 175 miles and the ABS light gave the same 5 miles warning to impending deadness.

4) the part # in the tech section for the tensioner pulley bearing is also the correct one for a 94 serpentine belt motor.

I had my friend the rebuilder do the alternator, it needed pretty much everything but a case...$185 out the door with a 1 year warrenty and it makes 115 amps at its cut off....beats the hell outa $500+ labor at a dealership or $379 at Napa. all in all the removal ,rebuild of the pulley and replacement of the serpentine belt was well under an hour. Its a job that anyone should be able to do.

Happy New Year

MM
