Hey guys i have been noticing lately that there has been a sort of gutural exhaust noise coming form the engine compartment when i drive. there had been a few posts here about a cracked exhaust manifold so i got under to check it out. looking up from under the truck i was visually inspecting the mainfolds when i noticed that the mounting plate that attaches the exhauist manifold to the downpipe had only 2 bolts holding it together the third bolt, closest to the engine block is gone. i shimied over to the passenger side downpipe and the same one on that side is gone. i take it this is not the way it shoulld be and most likely what i am hearing is an exhaust leak from the down pipes on both sides.

so assuming that i should in fact have three bolts does anyone have a spec for these bolts? also should i replace the gasket that is between the down pipe and the manifold or should i just slap a bolt in there and tighthen it up?

replacing the gaskets is a good idea, as long as you're messing around in there. They are cheap - try Nathan if he carries them or maybe AB.

You should be fine with 2 tight bolts with a good gasket, but I replace my bolts with simple hardware store bolts (metric, I forget the size). The stock bolt you have is actually a threaded stud & nut, but I was able to back out the stud with the nut. The studs frequently break, so be careful. I replaced them with a simple hex-head bolt. You should check these bolts every few thousand miles - they like to loosen themselves up (and fall out).

thanks blue. the threaded stud and nut are both gone. just an empy hole. are there supposed to be three in there? i just think its weird that the same stud on each side fell out. or maybe it was a lazy mechanic somewhere back before i bought it

two of mine on driver's side fell out on their own

one on passenger side was loose

when I noticed the rumble

should be 3 - what year? D1? mine's a 1996

see if you can back one out and take it into the hardware store. Or just grab a handfull of metrics and ask them to let you try them all to see what fits

same here, I went and tapped out the stud holes with a coarse thread tap, fine thread is what is there now, and i feel more comfortable with a coarse thread, i dont remember the size, but worked well 2 years ago!

I had lost 1 on each side and all others were finger tight on my '96 two years ago. I chalked it up to the engine being replaced at 35K on warranty. (cam broke in half) Guess that wasn't it. :-)

I got two genuine replacement studs with hardware from the dealer for about $11. Installed those and tightened others and all is still well.

Mine loosen all the time. If I don't tighten them every few months, they fall off completely.

Kind of a pain in the ass.

I thought I read that LR had a new gasket part, that had some kind of fold-over retention tab similar to the manifold to block gasket, but haven't researched it further. I also hesitate to *loosen* any bolts that are already tight for fear of busting a stud, and of course removal would be required to replace the gasket...

Turned 80K miles on my '94 today. Certainly not high miles, but its kind of gotten to the point that little things go wrong and don't get fixed.

Replace the stud and the gasket with new ones. Then use copper BMW-type exhaust nuts (size and thread count?)to replace the stock steel ones and use anti-seize on threads.

hey greg where does one aquire these BMW type exhaust nuts?

Any german or BMW auto repair shop or parts store will carry them. It's a common upgrade for VW owners to use too.

Only prob is I can't remember what the rover thread size/count is for exhaust manifold to downpipe. BMW is an M8 size I believe. I just looked at mine and I apparently put new steel nuts on last time I replaced downpipe gaskets so maybe the BMW ones don't fit(?).
