I have a 1994 Discovery that is hard to start when its cold. When I start to crank it will fire and if I don't get it started then. It will just turn over and over. It will almost start or mabey it kinda half starts, but can't get going. this finally happened at home the other day. I pulled the #1 plug and it was wet with fuel, but it was firing. So I know I have spark and fuel. The battery seems to run down pretty fast when I am trying to crank, so I am wondering if I don't have a hot enough spark. I am on the lookout for a fuel pressure guage to check up on the fuel rail. Where else should I be looking? It has 148000 miles on it and was tuned up about 20000 miles ago. Thanks Charles

Could it be a timing issue?

Ever replace the coil?
If the Spark is wet, did you dry it out or replace it?
Check battery condition as well....

There could be several issues... check for correct fuel pressure at rail, when was the last time ignitiol wires were replaced? Also you could test the injectors out.. 148k & 11 years you could have several seaping injectors. I just recently had a similar problem but it was a slow cranking starter that seemed to be causing the hard start. I replaced the starter (actually rebuilt it) and engine seems to turn over faster and hard start is no longer present.

I checked tie timing when I got it running and it was good. The battery posts and clamps were kinda corroded and the I could see where the green stuff had climbed up the cable. I got some new gold plated (bling, bling) clamps, cut off the old ones and so far it has done ok. I still want to check the fuel pressure. How would I test the injectors out? As far as I know the coil has never been changed and it has been about 30,000 miles since I changed the plugs, plug wires, rotor button and distributor cap. Thanks CHarles

I have this problem on mine and it got worst this winter. I pray i get it going on the first try in the morning. I changed plugs wires rotor cap and cold sensor switch on the fuel rail, it starts better but I still have to crank for a while on the first start of the day. I think you are right it is a fuel preaure problem but i have not figured it out yet. It must lose preasure but weather its leaky injectors?? I have put lots of posts on the site but I don't think i want to spend lots of cash to replace injectors if i am not sure. Anyway the leaky injectors are suppose to flood the engine on the first start and thats why it won't start or there is no pressure in the rail and i am not sure if its because there is no fuel pressure till start up that makes the hard start. I am afraid to trouble shoot this till i know for sure.

I'm surprised no one mentioned oil type. WHAT TYPE OF OIL grade are you using? 10wX40w is good but in the winter you may want to switch to
5wX 40w. it helps it start faster as well. Try this first along with fuel pressure check and the other things mentioned as an alternative.

Mine is doing this now,and all ways seems to do it when its time to change the oil.
I bet that when I drain the oil it will be like water.
Mine is a sluggish hard start.
