So I noticed my 1 year old countertops in my kitchen. Well the top on the counter is coming up at the seam where the 2 different parts met. It is about 2 cm higher then the other side. Anyone know what the problem might be or why they did this?

I actually am not sure, all i can find about it is square edge top. It has a thin top layer, and under it there is wood. Does that help any. Also it is about 1cm high, not 2cm. My parents are gone and I don't think it was like it so I just need to know what could cause it to do that.

Dean-would it go down? Can it be fixed?

Kyle-I can't do that, my parents would be freaking pissed, and well I don't have the money to replace it.

Its not necessarily your fault CALM, it could be damp for any number of reasons. Its poorly made to begin with if its only 1 year old. Kyle is right (this time):-), toss the thing and get a decent material.

Try stacking a load of weight onto where it's swollen, and not using it for a while, as it dries out. Maybe it will compact again, I dunno.

Kyle, very funny! :-)

It is a problem, so we need to destroy it. Not learn to deal with the problem and maybe fix it, oh no, we must get rid of it...

CALM, I made counter tops for a living for a while for a cabinet shop. I bet your tops are made out of OSB board. If the the plastic was not joined tightly and moisture did get under it, it will only get worse. There is realy nothing you can do about it. OSB will just keep swelling. The only thing you can try is sealing the seam with a putty that any cabinet shop should have. But, this is just a quick fix. The whole counter top needs to be replaced. I would start by calling the place who made your tops. If they are only one year old, they should at least cut you a deal on a replacement top. But, don't count on the finish to match. In the mean time you may try laying something really heavy on the seam. This may, or may not, push the seam back down. But, likely the wood will still swell as long as it gets wet.

How much time do you have to fix it before your parents return?

I have an idea, but don't try this without someone who knows (like Will maybe?) could you lift the top, saw off the swollen particle board to be even with the rest of the counter, and then glue it back down??

Just an idea?? (but sometimes I have really dumb ideas!)

Good Luck!! Jamie

No, not really.

You're showing responsibility wanting to make sure they come home to an intact house. It would be no fun to come home from a great day of wheeling, then come back to spends days of being in the doghouse!

If you don't get it fixed, maybe you could say the Cat In the Hat came by with Thing 1 and Thing 2, but left without cleaning up the big mess they made? Perhaps add that you got all of their mess cleaned up except for that??

I have faith in the collective knowledge of this board, someone will tell you how to fix it in time, I'm sure! :-)

Good Luck, Jamie

Is this Formica that's swelling at the seam due to water damage?

Good luck... :-)

I hope your parents do not send you to a kennel next time they leave.

Go here and ask <http://ths.gardenweb.com/forums/>

From my experience there is really not much you can do to the base now, just seal the top.

I assume you know what caused the water damage. :-)

If not then make sure that there's not a leaky water line under the counter that's going to cause it to happen again.

Actually I have no clue what caused it. But then again there are part that i don't remember :-). I found a good excuse though, say I left my nalgene in the freezer and it turned to ice so i left it on the counter to thaw.

Why not just tell the truth? Someone spilled something on the counter. Since the counter tops were not made right, they are now no good.

Chris-

Be a man and just pay for the repair yourself. If you can find the original invoice you may be able to work something out with the original installer to replace the section(s) needed with the correct shade and manufacturer. Formica is relatively inexpensive (at least compared to granite or other natural stone countertops).

If your parents are anything like me, they will have more respect for you and that, in turn, will get you more than what the repair cost (I'm not just talking about money here).

It is fine, I told them the truth that I really had no idea what happened, but that I think water may have gotten under it. They were fine with it, but I offered to pay for it, and we should be able to fix it. So horray for D-web.

Greg-I like that picture...
