I broke a front axle last weekend and after looking over the front CV I noticed a discoloration. It looks like the CV had been getting hot and "blueing" the CV at the point where the bearings meet.

I run gear oil in my swivel balls, not grease. Is it normal for the CV's to look like this?

Seems to me that you have inadequate fluid getting to your CV's. Are your swivels leaking at all?

No, they do not seem to be leaking. But, when I did drain the fluid from the swivel ball it was a grey, metalic color. Looked like it may of had some water in it. I change the oil in the swivel balls offen, about every 3000-6000 miles.

It's hard to tell from the pix, but often that blueing is left from the factory heat treat and not from running /lube issues.
