I took off my rear muffler, the one directly under the bumper, and threw it away. A few days later my check engine light came on. It is still driving fine, I have driven 250 miles with no problems. Do you think I need to get a replacement muffler, and if I do will the light go off? Thanks.

Brandon I am 99.9% sure the two have nothing to do with each other. Have the code read to find out the "real" reason.

Thanks. I took it to one place and they could not get a proper reading, so it looks like I am going to have to take it to the dealership and get a new one ripped.

Have Autozone check the codes for you - it's free. The dealership will try to get at least $60 out of you. I am not so sure that the codes are not related to your muffler. I recently blew a hole in my front muffler and a code went off that same day. It was related to emmissions (catalytic). I'll find out for sure when I replace the muffler this next week.

Anything behind the catalytic converter doesnot effect the emissions or the check engine light. The final reading for the the diagnostic system is at the catalytic converter. So removing your resonator had absolutely nothing to do with the check engine light.

But could it allow more air through the system, thereby making the O2's freak a bit and set off the sensor?

By the way Brandon, did taking off the rear muffler help with HP? Is it any louder than stock? I need to replace my whole exhaust from the cats back so I want to see if I can just get by with only the front muffler.

Any other benefits to doing this?

Cory. If you don't need new pipes, I would recommend replacing the muffler with either a magnaflow or flowmaster muffler and then removing the resonator. The magnaflow will give it good sound and only be slightly louder than stock. The flowmaster will be fairly louder than stock.

If you don't need new pipes, the total cost should be about 150 dollars. If you need new pipes then it should be about 200 - 250 bucks.

What you will notice a better low end performance and mileage.

Corey,

The rear muffler really does not make that much noise difference. You can weld in a flowmaster or ravin' muffler by removing the main muffler. You do not have to get new pipes this way. It will just cost welding costs and price of components you choose.
