I just bought a cobra 75 and will be mounting it on the front RHT of my ARB. Where is the best place to run the cables into the cab from? I will have the power cables from the battery and also the coax cable.
Thanks

I'm installing mine tomorrow. I will run the cable and wire through the rubber boot to the left behind the brake pedal.

Darryll,

I'm not sure if Matthew is talking about the same hole, but on my '98 D1 I found a rubber gromit(sp?) to the right of the master cylinder.

The hole is about an inch in diameter.

Matthew and Victor,

I saw that rubber boot on mine (97 D1), are you going to take it completly out and have a air gap or do you have another boot with a hole in it to run the wires through.

Which antenna do you have, and where are you putting it?

Darryll,

I used a utility knife to cut a small slit (not a hole)in the rubber gromet and then pulled the wire through. You could add some silicone to the slit to protect against leaks.

You might want to put a bit of a U shaped curve in the wire just before it goes through the gromet. This will act as a drip-stop, to prevent water from creeping along the wire into the hole.

Regarding the radio, I also have a Cobra 75WXST (I think that's the model number), the all in the handset one. I like mine, but I wish sometimes the volume was a bit louder. I would suggest an external speaker.

Darryll,

To be honest I have a very cheap 4ft top loaded fiberglass like the firestick. I bought it for about $5 at a truck stop. It is mounted on the spare tire mount at the back.

I had to put in a few washers to move the spare out so that I could unscrew the antenna when I wasn't using it.

Darryll,

I installed my Cobra 75 WX ST CB today. Just like victor said, I cut a slit in the boot, and pushed the antenna cable through. I also put some silicone around it to make it water tight.

I have a Wilson "little Wil" magnetic whip antenna (38"). I put it directly above my head on the roof rack. I tuned the antenna with an SWR meter, and channels 1 and 40 both read about 1.4. This antenna is great because you can plug it in, tune it, and you're done.

I installed the small CB connector box under my seat. There's a cross bar under the seat that I attached it to with some brackets ( I didn't want to drill into the cross bar). I then routed the cable that connects to the handset through the plastic cover under the seat. It comes out directly under the front right corner of the seat. I mounted the handset to the left of the diff lock knob on the little hump that's on the center console. That way the handset faces towards you and it's easy to hear. I then routed the coax and wires under the plastic molding thats near the edge of the door. I then ran it under the back of the seat to the connector box.

Hope that helps,

Matt

Darryll,

I haven't really had a chance to test it out. After I tuned it last night, I turned it on and heard some truckers talking about prostitutes loud and clear. Man those guys have dirty mouths.

The Wilson "Little Wil" is a pretty nice antenna. It has a big 10oz magnet and all you have to do is plug it in, tune it, and you're done.

Matt

I glad to hear yours is working. I did not have time to get mine installed but will get to it soon. I have been told to be prepared for the foul talk that can come over the CB. I want mine more for the trail, and use with other 4x4s. I guess we can will have to deal with what we hear.

Darryll,

I know you'll be happy with your Cobra after you get it installed. I mainly bought mine for trail use too, but it's still fun to talk to other people when you have nothing to do.

I can atleast find one or two channels with people argueing on them. Some people just like to do it for fun.

Justin,

Sorry about not getting those pics yet. I've been pretty busy with family and school stuff (FINALS, arrrggggg! The worst part of the school year.)
