I got a code recently from my 96 D1 of P1509. It is the "IAC Motor Circuit Short". IAC is Idle Air Control, but what does that mean?! Any suggestions on where to find this / diagnos?

This may be related to a starting problem. I usually have to give it gas when starting (80% of the time).

It is also often called a stepper motor. When you car is idling, the IAC or stepper motor opens up a valve to let just enough air bypass your intake to keep the motor running. Since yours is failing, you need to keep your foot on the gas so that the main intake opens up so air can get in.

There are some articles in the tech section on this, under FAQ.

Corey,
Check the archieves for IAC and "Stepper motor". There is a bunch of info on this. As a matter of fact there was just a post on 1/1/03 describing the location and cleaning method......

Hey Axel - thanks for the link! Took out my stepper motor today and cleaned it up and it starts without a problem! It seems like there is more horsepower in the low end too for some reason. Maybe no blockage of airflow??

Anyway just wanted to say thanks! I love this site!

Ok - I spoke too soon. I got the P1509 code again when I started it up this morning and had to give it gas. Does this mean my stepper motor is going bad? And anyone know a good place to pick one up?

Corey,

My 97 did the same thing. I took it to my mechanic and he found leaking injectors. I am having problems with my stepper. It starts fine but idles rough and sometimes dies. You may want to have the injectors checked. Before I replaced mine, it would not start unless I pumped the gas or held it to the floor. It would even send a puff of smoke out when starting. I hope this helps.

Chris
