Has this ever broken off of anyone elses rover?

Here is pic of the latest thing that I broke this afternoon.

There are twisty things on the inside of the panel when it is open (you can see both of them in lime green arrows on the bottom pic). These twisty things are held in place by the thing in above pic (when you use a quarter to open or close the panel).

Awhile back, the one near the drivers door fell down. Getting it back in place was not easy, and I accomplished this with 60 second epoxy. It took me LOTS of tries to finally get it back on in the (almost) correct place. This one that I fixed is shown with the pink arrow.

So, today - as soon as I opened the panel - bam, out came the one on the right side of panel. You can see where it SHOULD be by the blue arrow.

From what I was told when the first one broke off, they are stuck in place at the factory with hot black (liquid?) stuff that hardens into plastic.

Has anyone else ever fixed one of these. Does anyone have any ideas of a simplier (faster and less messy!) way that I can fix the one that fell down today?

Thanks SO MUCH in advance, Jamie

I had a different, but related, problem about a year ago (metal to plastic adhesive). I contact a local plastics firm that fixed me up with some specialty adhesive that hardened up like concrete. Hardest part was getting it to stay in place long enough to set.

Thanks Bruce,

I just tried the epoxy mix again. It went a little better since I had better visibility than on the left side. I wore nitrile gloves too and just held it there. Gloves stuck and I just pulled my hands out of them.

It has to dry for an hour before I try it, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it will stay in place when I try to close the panel. I've been procrastinating about fixing my CB - all because I didn't want to open the panel.

Getting metal attached to plastic is hard!! Did you have to mix up the adhesive that you used?

Thanks for your help, Jamie

Jamie, you can try a little JB Weld on it. Just make sure you let the mixture harden up a bit before you use it and that you have everything where you want it. When the stuff dries, it becomes very hard to remove. Good luck - Mark

Jamie, I have experienced the same problem. Fortunately only one of mine broke off. So the only ill-affect is a wonderful vibrating noise. I once attempted half-heartedly to fix it with a strong, but nothing special, adhesive. Failed. I plan on using JB Weld when I next get around to it.

It worked. I think I did better using the expoxy this go around. I've decided I like it so much I will buy some more (I used most of it by messing up so many times the first time the thingy fell off).

The compound that the factory used to attach those does not seem to have a long life. Both times they have fallen off it has been from their compound cracking (leaving an equal amount of the black compound on the part itself and also on the attachment area). If anyone else needs to fix this kind of thing, I used VersaChem 60 second Epoxy System from Discount Auto Parts. The first time I also tried the same in a 5 minute dry format and it did not dry quick enough since I had to try to hold it there so long.

I'm going to have to find out what JB Weld is! It sounds like a handy product :-)

Thanks, Jamie

It's at Home Depot, Jamie, and I suppose any other similar store...little red-capped tube and a little black-capped tube IIRC.
