I noticed that everyone just about fits the safari gard rear bumper on their discoīs. Has anyone fitted the trek rear bumper and had any major problems or just isnīt enough protection on the quarter panels like the safari gard has. I really like that your able to use your stock lights on the the trek series instead of throwing them out on the safari gard. What are your comments.

D1, rovertym is nice but the nerf bar on the side is just asking for it to get stuck on a rock a bend forward into the quarter panel and you canīt use the stock lights.

You can get it without the "nerf bar". Reguardless, I don't think that thing is going to bend by sliding across a rock.

I would like to get a Greg Davis bumper, but I have not been able to get a price, delivery time etc. I had tried emailing, but have gotten no response. Any suggestions?

Greg Davis bumper is by far the best. Check out my website for pictures. It was 625 plus shipping. Make sure you paint it well, it comes unpainted, mine is chipping a bit and I will have to do some touchups. You can also have it poweder coated.

Go to Greg Davis's gallery and click his email there.

Oh, and I think he only has email at work and usually responds only in the mornings of business days. He's not a nut like us who check it every 5 min.

Jamil,
Thanks for the info. Greg contacted me and I will be getting a bumper from him. Where did you get the red and yellow lights from? I would like to do the same thing and there's another thread asking the same question. BTW, if you still have the SLS airbags, how much do you want for them? Thanks.

Just wondering, please do not take it the wrong way. If you need to cut the quarter panels, why worry about quarter panel protection?

Uh, because a clean, straight line of metal is usually preferred to mangled, crumpled metal. At least that's my preference.:-)

I've been running the Trek for a year on the D2. The fat D2 ass is always dragging and the Trek does a good job of taking it. It spends allot of time on the ground. It is convenient to pop the stock lights in but I've found they're a liability as they do stick out about 1/4 inch from the bumper. I've been thru a few.....

Cutting the quarter panels limits the amount of contact. Protecting them afterwards limits the damage in case of contact.

Hello all,
I'm being posted to central Africa (Cameroon) for a few years with my family and am considering purchasing a late model ('99-'01) Discovery. My employer will ship it. Unfortunately I haven't been able to locate a dealer in Cameroon. This is one reservation that I have and I'm a bit surprised because there are LR dealerships in neighboring countries.

My second reservation is the automatic transmission which is not often encountered in Africa. So, does anyone out there have any experience with Disco in Africa, ie having parts shipped and maintenance performed?

Any advice or insight would be appreciated.

S.

Stephen: The auto transmission is more reliable than the manual, and if maintained appropriated will last 150-200k miles. I sense that manuals transmissions are much less than that. All you need is ATF and the filter etc. When BMW ran D1s in the paris dakar rally LR made them take Autos being more trustworthy

Trek Outfitters is currently working on a new, revised version of the rear bumper for the D2's. They're going to have 2 models: one that you can just bolt on like the current one, and one that you need to cut the rear quarters for. I talked to Tina yesterday at the local LR dealer and they were fitting them on a test car that day. Should be out soon.

I recently installed the $G rear bumper on my DII and chose it over the Trek because of the increased departure angle. I used round LED's to replace the stock lights that were in the bumper. If you tow alot, Safari Gard can make you a rear bumper that will allow you to retain your stock hitch, or you can have one made like mine with the receiver welded in to give you more ground clearance in the rear.

I can speak from experience that a clean cut quarter panel looks much better than a crumpled and scratched one.

So far, I have been very pleased with the bumper. The only thing I would change is the width of the skid plate. It should be wider than the frame rails in my opinion.

Just my 2 cents worth...
