who makes the best diff guards that can take a beating. QT makes awesome ones but you have to weld them on. Need to get some guards because I´ve seen what a boulder can do to a diff.

I dont know if they're the best, but they only have to be clamped on.

The QT's only need to be welded on the front one, and its two small tabs.

I have a set of Thatched Roofed Garage diff guards, and I'm happy with them. They're double bolted at the top too.

I have to say, I sure do like the Land Rover (Southdown) version. I have them on my rig and they've held up nicely.

Sadly, they are expensive (at least to me). But, I do like them. I've set my truck on them more than once, and they have performed flawlessly.

Here's what they look like on my rig:

Rear: http://www.discoweb.org/billmallin/DSCF14_1.jpg

I know a lot of folks build their own from steel (as opposed to aluminum) as well.

Bill,
Your rear 3rd member guard looks awesome. I've been wanting to get a guard that protects that area, how much was it?

Yeah, that WOULD hurt.

I've got the QT's and they do the job. Only 2 little tabs to weld to the front - welding shop took about 15 minutes and charged me $10 - no sweat. Another nice thing is the rear guard provides some protection to the u-joint and provides a little "ramp" for things about to hit. Both front & rear cover the bottom of the diff too.

I've heard (but haven't witnessed) that with the round clamp-on type, the rear cover can be drug off on the trail. Also, the round ones only cover the pan - not the bottom of the diff.

Jay:

I don't think it is possible (well, anything is possible) to drag the ones I have off. Check out this pic:

Those two bolts are bolted directly into the housing. You'd have to shear the bolts to drag it off.

Yes, it IS possible. The QT rear bolts on the same, and yes it can be sheared off. Don't ask me how I know this. :-)

Bill, I haven't seen the ones you got - looks alot like the OTs. The ones I was talkin' 'bout just cover the diff pans - just clamped around the diff, ya' know? Yours goes underneath and bolts like my QTs.

Texmoto: anyone that shears those $*@&$# things off is either using Fisher-Price bolts, or...I need to ride shotgun with you one time, dude!

I vote for the genuine diff covers.

I've got the rear diff cover and the front is part of the axel guard kit.

Part of my logic in justifying the price was that "if" I ever do have any trouble, LR won't think that the source was from a 3rd party modification part.

I've got 2 1/2 years left on my warranty and don't want to contribute to causing myself grief in the future :-)

What the devil is all that stuff on your rear 3rd bill? Is that needed to install the diff cover?

looks like something to hold the cover on if it falls off, but seems to be a lot, just for that purpose.

Also does not appear to come forward enough to protect the roto or the u-joint.

O, I see.

No no. That's not part of the diff guard. That's the harmonic balancer; it comes with the DIIs.

Looks like dampener weights to me. Same stuff as D1 got on front, just a bit different shape.

However that flange looks pretty weird to me...

And let me tell you.......I've got the same set up on my rear diff as Bill and I did the install myself (alone - as in nobody to help. The weight of that harmonic balancer is incredibly heavy. I was sore for 3 days after that from trying to position everything so that I could get the screws to thread up in there. Won't do that again. When they say it takes two to do the install they weren't kidding.

Get that sucka off there ;-)

At least it doesn't dangle down low like the d1 front one does, but eventually you get sick of that roto anyhow. Once I put 235/85s and 3" lift all if took was a nasty hil climb and that roto consistantly turned inside out.

Darn.. its rotoflex.. no wander it did look weird..

Kelly - I think its the test of how manly disco drivers are.. Should be able to hold it with one hand and screw bolts with another, laying on the floor :-) On D1 is way more funnier b/c you also has to hold steering dampener bracket with same hand :-)

Oh yeah and my 2cents - QT skids.. They are beefiest from what i seen and they do protect diff from all sides (including scenario when you backing up onto some rocks). And i am yet to weld on front brackets :-)

Kelly:

I feel your pain. I did it alone too. I mean, how hard can it be?

That little bastard is heavy and a pain to try and hold upside down on your back while trying to line up the damned screw holes.
