Hello,

I had a problem a couple of months ago and thoght I knew what the problem was. My 97 Disco will sometimes for no reason and only when at idle will spudder and die. If I try to crank it up it starts everytime, it just want idle. If I can get the rpms up I can drive it forever until I stop again. Sometimes it will only do this for just a few mins then not for a month or two. I was told once because it happened in a carwash, that the fuel pump connector got wet. Today it happened but there was not water for miles. I drove about 250 miles, got off the exit to get some fuel(I had half a tank), stopped at the light and it went dead. I cranked it back up and pushed to the floor in D and it drove at about .5 miles per hour until I got to the station. I shut it off got some fuel and then cranked it up. Did not give me any other problems.

Here is what I have had replaced in the past month.

New Injectors
New Rail
New Fuel Filter
New Fuel Line
Tank Removed and Clean
Fuel Pump removed and tested (Tested Fine)
New Plugs
New Wires

Any Ideas?

Thanks

I don't know if this may work for you, but I had the same symptoms. Eventually threw a fault code for the stepper motor (IAC motor). Cleaned it and now it idles fine. There is a write up in the tech section on how to clean it. Pretty simple to do, may be worth a try.

Yes check the stepper motor i had similar problem but my idle was very hi. wosrt cas you mite have to go to the dealer and have the steper motor reset along with the base idle. it will cost about $100 if you need more info on the steper motor just email @ ineedthissale@cs.com im willing to bet that is the problem

my 96 did something similiar, it ended up being a corroded connector at the fuel pump. If it does it again, check to see if there is fuel at the engine by pushing on the schrader valve on the fuel rail or listen and see if you can hear the pump running with the key on. Could still be the stepper motor, I clean mine at every oil change and it won't idle for a day, then dries out and is fine. Good luck, ron

My oil light did come on but I think that is due to motor going dead. I did pull off the stepper motor and boy it was dirty. It was covered with black hard junk "I guess carbon". I cleaned it with carb cleaner, brake cleaner and a small steel brush. It looks new now but I still keep feeling like the car is about to stall again. I had a carbon build up cleaning job. Now everything looks brqand new but I still can tell the RPMs still bounce between 790 and 590. I just ordered a new air filter. I checked the fuel pump and pump connectors, it looks and works fine.

Do you really think going to the dealer and having the idle reset will work. Is it something they have to do or is it something I could do?

Thanks for the help

Chris

Also pull the case vent line off of the intake and follow it back it has a little plastic "T" and clean all of the carbon out of that as well. it has a very small orifice in it that must be clean or the idle will hunt up and down until it stalls.
