What type of gear oil do you folks use in the front/rear diffs? I have not found it in the archives or my owners manual. I need to change them and can not find the weight spec. Thanks all.

D2 shop manual says: Texaco Multi-Gear 75W/90R, but many people just buy the 5 gallon drums of 80W/90 for around $25 and use that.

Through Lucas 80W/90 in my disco last week. Seems to do alright with that, although it can add up :-)

Yup. I pick up the cheapest 80w90 that I can find and change it often. If you do this much get a 5 gallon can lid w/ the pump built in. Makes a diff fluid change take about 5 minutes.

The synthetics are still too pricey for me to justify throwing away every 3k miles or everytime I take the diffs swimming.

It doesn't really matter, it'll end up sprayed underneath the vehicle or dripping on your drive before too long.

Well, actually I have no leaks at this time (knock on wood).

I change my diff oil pretty damn often. Everytime I wade, or about 4 times a year which is really pretty damn close to 3k for me. I now have a system that makes this a piece of cake and I will do the same for ATF and engine oil now that I have found a pretty reliable source for both in 5 gallon size.

The link provided above provides information for all land rover fluids in this case it is a link to amsoil synthetics. I cannot imaging how much dollars I would spend if I were using synth ATF, Gear and Engine oil. In fact since I view lubricants as something that should be changed religiously and frequently I see no reason to go synth.

Now my new diesel??? That may be another issue that I am currently researching, but the thought of 14 qts of synth oil, 16 qts of synth ATF and 3 gallons of synth gear oil has a pretty big pinch on the pocket book and better damn well be worth it.
