Check out the Dunlop Radial Rover RT... a nice aggressive AT with excellent snow handling ability.

You might want to check out PepBoys Futura Enforcer A/T or M/T. I have the MTs.

I have had no complaints with my Big "O" X-T's. For me it’s the perfect tire for all types of road conditions without compromising too much. Besides...their warranty alone makes them worth looking at.

I only usually add positive comments, but my previous set of tyres were Pirelli Scorpions and they were useless. They wore down quickly and were hopeless on anything except tarmac. I use Fedima Extreme which are are a lot quietter and grippier on the road than they look like they should be, and grip like mad on everything else.

For on-road, sand and snow, the Pirelli Scorpion S/T is a great tire. I think they just replaced it with the STR and STRA. If you're not going off-road, as in rocks and sharp stuff, get a street tire. If you're in the Scorpion Zero price range, go for the STR, the Zero doesn't do so good in the snow.

we just replaced the original stock XPCs on our 99 Callaway with a set of Yokohama Geolander HT-S G052's and they've performed extremely well in the recent east coast snowstorms and rain. not sure how they are offroad, but they did pretty well for a street tire in mud.

Have the Nokians - no complaints on road performance is pretty good - it's a truck after all :-)

and i triple it...
the BFG A/T is a great tire, both on the road and moderate trail stuff... the perform great @ about 18 psi on mostly dry to moderately wet terrain...
on the road i feel them grip better than my michelin xpc's that came with the '96...
anyway, 245/70r16 was my golden number on my stock disco they stuffed wonderfully and have now had them on two rigs... everyone i know who has them swears by them...
my .02...

I like the MT too, but feel like the AT are a little better general purpose off the shelf. Siping will help tosome degree in the wet, but in packed snow and ice, as well as general road manners the AT seems superior to me.

In heavy offroad over rocks, the AT will chunk off considerably more than the MT though. I suggested the AT because of the original post was mostly for onroad.

I also just looked back at the post... If it were me I would replace those 18" rims with max 16". I can't remember all of the DII tire sizes, so someone else can chime in on that.

I got about 45k miles on the MTs with moderate offroad use and am well set to get 50k+ on the AT with on-road only. You must run them pretty high pressure (40-50 psi) to get that kind of mileage and the 245/75s I was using was load range E tire.

It is a bit stiff, but I like it.

Between my trucks, I have three sets of XPCs, one BFG A/T, one - BFG M/T, and one - Futura Enforcer. As far as all-purpose tires go, A/T is by far better than anything I've driven. Very quiet (quieter than XPC), has softer rubber compound than XPC, grips like MoFo to nearly anything (including rocks), very rarely loses its balance. Reasonably good in snow and sand (but useless in mud), better on ice than XPC or any mud tire. And it wears well - I'd guess the life of an A/T on a Disco at about 65-70kmi (XPCs rarely live past 55-60).

BFG AT.

Started with the stock Michelins on my D1. Went to 245/75-16 BFG AT's with no lift and a little trimming.

Lifted 4", went to 265/75-16 BFG AT's and am a very happy camper. The tires last longer than a tire that grips that well has any right to.

I've just replaced one of the original ATs I had - it has lived for two and a half years on my jeep, then a year and a half - on my brother's, and a year on my other jeep. Don't know what was the mileage, but all three were daily drivers. Got an "old" AT as a spare (for $40) - it has more rubber than XPCs have new.
Disco seems to chew rubber faster than "109-inch-wheelbased" vehicles, but slower than the XJ. Must have something to do with the wheelbase.

Ricky, it seems to depend on the price range that your mind is set on. How much are these two you mentioned, and the Pirelli? About $120 per tire?
If that's the case, just buy Michelin LTX and forget about it for the next 60 thousand miles.

Gotta say, the dunlop radial rover r/t is one of the best all around tire I have had. Hard to beat in the snow, I have about 40k on em and they have another 10k in em. great tire. Great off road, decent in mud. Had the same pair now I had in vermont in 2000 when it snowed 1' I was pulling people consistantly.

I was raised in Idaho and they compare with the 4 wheel studed tires I had on previousally.

I will buy another pair when these wear out.

I have a few thousand klicks on Geolander ATs, I wouldn't call them the best tire in the world, but they are DIRT cheap compared to anything else I was able to find.
I could go through 2 sets of these for the price of 1 set of Michelins.
No problems so far.

The tally:

Dunlop Radial Rover RT: 1
Geolander AT: 1
Pirelli Scorpion S/T: 1
Futura Enforcer: 6

I would not put Pirelli on anything but a racecar. I burn through those tire like nothing. Had them on my Z and they lasted less than a year and cost like a devil. I have heard similar wear issues on their light truuck tires.

I second the Geolander AT. I have had mine for about 8K miles and no problems so far.

Off-road and in the snow/ice they seemed much beter than the original Michelins, but that could have more to do with the condition of the Michelins when I changed them.

Yokohama also has a 30 day satisfaction guarantee and pro-rated road hazard.

What an idiot I am, cut and paste the BFG right out of the picture and gave the vote to Geolander.

The tally:

Dunlop Radial Rover RT: 1
Geolander AT: 2
Pirelli Scorpion S/T: 1
Futura Enforcer: 1
BFG AT: 7

We just replaced the tires on our '99 Callaway with Geolander HT-S G052's. The ride is smoother, they’re definitely quieter, and performance on-road is definitely better than the XPCs. They did pretty well on moderate snow (the recent east coast snowstorms). They were fairly easy to balance and installation was very quick (at a local tire place). So far, they have around 1500-2000 miles on them. I’m not sure how much use they will be offroad though, so if you plan to do some offroading look for another tire (although they’re almost definitely better than those Wrangler HPs).

I Was shop forman in 2 tire shops over 2.5 years. A Big O, and a Good Year. I do like the Geolander for it's performance capabilities and looks, but we had so many unsatisfied customers with it's longevity. They quickly start to feather and cup on any vehicle, and even customers who regularly rotated and balanced still never seemed to get the promised lifespan of the tire.

I will always be a fan of the BFG's. They perform great, (rated #1 by Peterson Off Road Mag. last year) and they wear well, except the customers who drove the whole lifespan with the allignment off. Also if you plan on sticking with the 18's, which i wouldn't recommend if your taking it off road ever, they make an awesome 18 in the AT, but I believe the only size was in a 185, which will be too wide for a stock rover.

In my personal opinon I will never go away from the Big O. The warrantee alone makes them a great investment, especially if you plan on going off road. They also perform pretty well. Go with any but the pathmax, or the old style AT. They redesigned the AT for the better a year and a half ago. Both had problems being out of round.
I'm also not sure about the availability in 18's, I know when I left in may they were trying to make them more available, but haven't followed them since.

I don't much care for the Pirelli's or the Michelins anymore. (I'm running the michelin LTX AT's on my green disco.) Neither seem to last any longer than the others, but sure can cost more.

The Futura was never a popular tire around here, so I'm not too sure about how it lasts on the vehicle. But i haven't heard many complaints, especially for the price.

We just picked up the Dunlope Tires as I left the Good Year store, but at the salesman training seminar on them, the stores that had been carrying them had a very loyal customer base!!! Which tells me they are also a good tire.

I just looked at your options on tirerack......go for the Bridgestone Dueler HP. It does not seem like you care about off road so why spend your money on tires suited for it. I have owned several sets of Bridgestone Dueler ATs and they have all been easily balanced and long lasting. My sister had a set of Yokos once on a Montero, they lasted 15K.
