Hi all, I have a power steering pump that has gone bad, evidenced by a terrible grinding sound, incredibly stiff steering and regurgitation of powersteering fluid. I want to know if anyone has changed theirs out and how much work was involved? What was the price you paid for a new pump? If you had a mechanic do it, what was the cost... This has to be taken care of very soon, so help me out with a post or six. -Ryan |

I bought a salvaged pump from Rover Cannibal for around $250 if I remember correctly. Pretty simple replacement, it's just nuts & bolts. http://www.rovercannibal.com/ |

Its not hard. I also have a couple of good pumps in with low miles for 125.00 each. |

It's pretty simple: 1. Remove Serpentine Belt 2. Disconnect the fluid lines 3. Remove the pump from the housing. Keep in mind that there a few bolts inside the housing as well. 4. Reinstall everything. 5. Refill resevoir. 6. Start engine and top off the resevoir and bleed the fluid (with engine running loosen small screw on the top of the steering box until fluid comes out)

I got mine replaced by the dealer and it cost me 700 bones. Not too bad, order rebuilt box around 300 bucks, then any company charges you a core charge of 250 bucks. Then pay for shipping which could be from 60 to 150 bucks depending if you want to wait a week or a day. Then try to install the box yourself and without the proper tools, good luck. Time is money, I got mine done in a couple of hours and was done with it. So sometimes paying more isnt really paying more. |

One note of caution...Be sure not to cross thread the lines. It is easy to do. |

Use a flare nut wrench. Removing the serpentine belt and low pressure line beforehand will give you more room. |

Blue, people are trying to tell the box from the pump, so wait until things are sorted out. BTW, how did you manage to clean up yours to that shine? |

Thanks for the many posts; my original question dealt with the steering pump. I am going to do the install today as the pump i purchased from Will arrived yesterday. I will take photos and post them soon, perhaps make a post in the TECH section as this seems to be a common and easily fixed issue with Disco's.... -Ryan |
