1997 D1 115K miles I blew a head gasket and piston which my mechanic replaced. I got the car back and after a couple hundred miles the same thing happened again. Mechanic took back car and broke the engine down again and discovered a 10/15 mm crack on the Short Block on the same piston the blew before. He did not see this on the first go around. Since he missed it on the first go around he is crediting me the 10 hours of labor to replace the block and gaskets. He states short block is 22 hour job and is crediting me 10 hours. The LR dealership he got the short block from is telling him he should replace the lifters and oil pump when replacing the short block. Do you agree or disagree? Also anything else I should be looking for with this extensive amount of work?

With all those miles on it I'd replace the entire engine with a 100% new unit look at www.rpiv8.com |

Disco 94 148 k mile I replaced mine w/ 4.0 short block along with lifters, oil pump, left and right exhaust manifold, front engine cover, radiator rod line, clean out stepper motor, rebuild both heads etc. How much your mechanic is charging you, if you don't mind? I spend almost 6K but to me it's worth it than buying a new car. It's hard to let go the truck after so many upgrades and off-roads. |

Replace the 4.0 short block with a 4.6 short block. The additional cost is not that much considering the total bill. You will end up with 230 hp and somewhere in the range of 300 ft.lbs of torque. Put in new lifters and cam. Rebuild the heads. |

I would strongly recommend spending a couple of extra bucks now and replacing the oil pump and lifters as well as having the heads reworked. It will more than likely save you some serious money in the future. You don't want to put that used stuff on that shiny new blcck and have the mechanic able to use that as an excuse later for any issues you might run into. Will |
