Troops:

I was looking through Rovertym's site because I am taking it slow at work today. I stumbled across this rear-end picture of Greg Hren's old (current? I know he was trying to sell it a while ago) rig:

Closeup here:

Better picture here:
http://www.rovertym.com/wheeling/mar2001/GDrearbump.jpg

I sent Greg an email, but maybe some of you can provide some insight--

I've ordered a SG rear bumper and want to add some lights. I want to add turn signals and rear fogs. My buddy, Josh, ordered a SG and we installed LEDs in his:

A. They look great.
B. They are a bit $ for my pocketbook.

I was trying to find an alternative to the LEDs.

There’s a constraint: The maximum diameter needs to be 2 inches or less. And, I need the red and orange lights to be of the same design (like Greg's and Josh's). I’ve looked on the Internet, and at a few trailer supply stores, and am not having any luck. I can find lots of round lights, but none that are < or = 2” in diameter.

So, any ideas as to where I can find some non-LED, inexpensive (relatively speaking) lights similar to the ones Greg used?

I also like the little rubber bumpers he used; any idea where to find those?

They look a bit like Morris Minor lights (front).

Have you tried JC Whitney ?

I've tried everywhere. The lights we installed on Josh's rig (white Disco in the picture above) are 1-3/4" lights. Perfect for a Safarigard. But, they are LEDs, and a tad pricey (actually, they are used for rear tail lights in custom motorcycles: http://www.customdynamics.com/led_billet_circle.htm). Ultimately, I'll get them if I am unable to find anything else, but I sure would like to find a less expensive option.

The problem is: you've got a tad more than 2" (say 2-1/4" vertical surface space) on the SG bumper. The lights from Grote and Truck-Lite are indeed 2" in diameter: http://www.grote.com/cgi-bin/product.cgi?familyid=B0003. But, you have to install them into a rubber grommet: http://www.grote.com/cgi-bin/product.cgi?product_number=92120. The outer diameter of the grommet is 2-13/16" (too big).

I need something that is flush-mount (or sticks out very little) with a maximum diameter of 2" - 2-1/4". A 1-3/4" light that fits into 2" - 2-1/4" OD grommet would be perfect. You'd think it would be an easy find, but so far it eludes me.

And, I still cannot seem to locate the rubber bumpers in the picture above. Greg said he got them from Fleet-Pride. I called them and they were clueless as to what I was talking about. Maybe I didn't explain it well?

Try
www.awdirect.com - they are a distributor for Truck-lite. You can also go to the truck lite site and you will find something there to fit - hundreds of lights to choose from

Called. Nothing with a max. diameter of 2" :-(

She is going to send me a grommet for a 2" light. Maybe I can modify it.

I'll keep you posted.

By the way, the LEDs on Greg's rig above are these:

The 2" ones. Nice. But, again, the grommet is too big for what I need.

I would suggest a couple of motorcycle places. Generally, the diameter of a cycle turn signal is 1.5 inches and lenses come in amber, red or clear (?). LEDs are also available. Check the following sites...

Also try West Marine or Boat US. Hella and others make lights for marine applications. I know they have round LED lights in white, amber, red, but I'm not sure of the size (or brightness).

I had a similiar problem when I put my SG bumper on. Mine was related to turn signal issues after making the conversion to stop/turn. I ended up converting the factory reverse lights to turn signals, and put clear fogs (Hella micor DE's)in the SG bumper for back up lights.

What rear bumper is Greg Hren, or was he running on his DII? It's not rovertym because the one that they show on their site sticks out way further than that. And does anyone know what are the other..what look like dual strobe lights.. are on the bumper?
Thanks
Jack

The Greg Hren bumper is an older design made by Greg Davis. He currently only makes the one on my truck.

Yeah, Greg was running an early version of my rear bumper. He added the lights, rubber bumpers, etc. himself.

Greg:

What's the vertical distance of that design?

Bill,

check JCWhitney and 4WheelDriveHardware for CJ rear lights. They have those with red, amber, and white lenses, about the diameter you want - but the lenses are not flat, so you'll have to make the lights recessed (or make some protection for them).
I'd spend more money on LED lights - you'll never have to worry about replacing them.
