I drive a '97 Disco. When I turn the headlights on, I loose the dash lights and the tail lights. Everything works fine with the parking lights on. For a while I was able to manipulate the switch, so all of the lights would work. Has anyone else had this problem? Any help would be great. It is annoying to have to get the rover home before it gets dark out.

Same problem on my 96 Disco. Replaced the headlight switch stalk and problem solved. I believe the problem is caused by normal wear and tear plus dust particles from offroad. You can buy a new one for about $140 from British Pacific (http://www.britishpacific.com/) or used (what I did), from British Car Services (http://www.britishcarservice.net/), asked for Steve and tell him Jose Cabrera asked you to call him, he is a great guy.

If you want to try and save the cost of a new headlight switch, the switch is pretty easy to rebuild. Take it out open it up and clean the contacts, you just need a pair of small screwdrivers. Unless it is really worn or broken you can usually fix it. The switch is very simple inside. Just open it carefully so you don't lose anything. You can do this in half an hour to an hour and if you break something you were going to buy a new switch anyway.

I took it to the garage where I usually take the Rover. After letting them order the switch and fix it, it ended up costing me $400. It was not only the switch, it was also the plug. Thwires were fried in the plug, so that had to be replaced too.
