OK so here goes... I have a bone stock 1999 Series I Disco w/ 66,000
miles. It has developed a strange vibration. While under power -no
problems. Letting up on the throttle at any speed over 50 and then
re-applying throttle will produce a vibration bad enough for your
passenger to start dialing on their cell phone. If you let up on the
throttle and VERY easily get back on it the transmission/driveline will
'catch up' with no vibration or very little. You can also down shift
out of OD and catch it up that way. You feel it in the seat. I did my
home work on the board and removed the front driveshaft and took it for
a drive. Still vibrated, but only 50% as bad as when both driveshafts
were installed. So I removed the rear driveshaft and I noticed 80% of
the vibration. My question is what else is there? I am really worried
about the Transfer case...Should I be? Vibrated the same way before and
after new tires -less than 600 miles on Michelins.

TIA ol' wise ones!
J-

How do the U-Joints look? How about the rotoflex coupler?

Matts on the right course I think...also check for loose bolts on the ujs.
Also look at recent work you have performed to the truck and recheck tighness of all bolts

Do you have a lift? Did this develop gradually or all of the sudden? Has it gotten any worse over time?

NO!!! I had this same problem and if you search under VSS or Vehicle Speed Sensor, you will find very similar results. I used to have this problem, and now it still happens after replacing the VSS, but nowhere near how it used to. Look into that.

Guys thanks for the responses... The LR family is the best. It thought I took the U-Joint and roto flex out of picture by removing the driveshafts. Could they still be the problem? I did have the VSS replaced in the truck but, it was vibrating before and right after the dealer replaced it... The VSS felt more like a lost of power. This feels more like something turning very fast out of round.

Ideas? Or how to isolate the culprit?

Thanks,
J-

Hmmm, if you do find something else let me know as I still have a slight hesitation as you describe, but much, much less after replacing the VSS.

Have you hit anything on the underside that might have hit the handbrake drum?
