Even though the dealership does the full service at every 7,500/6 months, I would like to get an oil service every 3,000 miles. However, the dealership is 300 miles away. can someone also other than the dealership perform the oil change without loosing warranty on anything related to the oil service? 300 miles for just an oil change seems quite a lot! if possible, is it better to use genuine oil filter and the same oil the dealership uses? any suggestions will be appreciated!

Jorge I bought factory oil filters when I was at the dealer and still change every 3,750 miles myself. The factory filters come with a crush ring for your drain plug. I would imagine a quick lube could preform a simple oil change for you. Good luck-Jim

Its so trivial to change your oil, why can't you do it yourself? After the first time you will do it every time, and you get to use whatever oil you want. Like Mobil 1.

I do most of my oil change myself but use dealer filters. you should call them and ask them about the warranty issue. who best to answer that question than the dealer themselves. I change mine every 3k miles or close to and don't forget to check you brake pads while there too.

I was changing the oil myself about every 3k and it became an issue when warrenty work was needed. They claimed they had no record of the oil changes and didn't like my hand written log book I keep in my tool box. The lesson I learned was that documentation is key. If you use the correct oil and filters and have a verifable record you should be ok, especially if the dealer is going to do it on the reccomended frequency.

BTW, they eventually accepted my record and covered the repairs but there were some heated discussions. They sent an independant inspector out to the shop to inspect the internal parts of the engine to prove it was not neglected.

Dean,

I always did the oil change in my previous Disco II, but it was after it went out of warranty. I am just worry because I heard that doing it some where also when still under could void the warranty. I'll just get the oil filters from the dealership and that way they won't ask when I go for the full service.

Jorge,

Wow some dealers are really that fussy? How can they know you changed your oil? You can buy rover filters and they will never know. And anyway, how can changing the oil hurt anything at all?

I'm leasing mine still, and I have NEVER got it serviced at the dealership in nearly 3 years, and they still warrantee everything (like the leaky water pump I had last month). I guess it depends on the dealer.

Changing your own oil will not void your warranty. However, if you do it wrong (for example, not tightening the filter and losing all the oil) warranty will not cover the resultant damage.

I suggest you buy genuine filters if you choose to do this at home.

When under warranty I always had the dealer service the vehicle, but provided my own Mobil 1.
