I bought my wife an Ipod with the FM modulator. The FM Modulator wasn't working too well, so we bought the adapter to put in the cassette player.

In our 98 it won't work. When it is put in the cassette slot, it stays in for about 5 seconds then kicks out. It will not play any music when it is in the cassette.

I put it in my XD and it works perfectly.

There is a difference between the two units. The LE displays a "2" when the adapter is in it, and also when a cassette is in.

The XD displays a "1".

Any thoughts? I really don't want to swap units just to appease this situation.

I can't remember the button, but try to get the LE display to flip to "1" which is side number 1. There should be a button that flips which side it plays and I think the way the adapters are designed, it doesn't like playing the back side.

Same thing happene to me, drove me nuts for a few minutes until I realized what is going on. Just put in a regular tape, and forward it to the end, then press play so the tape player reverses direction. Your adapter should now work just fine when you put it back in. I couldn't find the damn button to reverse direction, either... :-)

Also, if it continues to fuck up after the suggested remedies, you might want to try this: Take the cover off the cassette adapter, and reroute the wire so that it comes out the other end of the cassette. Try it that way and see if it works. It's what I had to do on mine. Many cassette adapters have the slot for the wire to run through on both sides, just for this situation.

Howboucha Porter and Axel!
I have to say that I feel like the biggest dumbass in the world now. Remember the radio skit (I think from Bob and Tom) "Mr Obvious". I bet my situation would have made a good one.

I went outside and you guys were tack-on.
Funny thing. I grabbed a "Forrest Gump" soundtrack tape. The song that was playing when I put it in was the Doors "break on through to the other side". Even the tape was trying to tell me what to do.

Thanks again,
I love D-Web!

Ok, so I have the same problem and did what you said. It will play for about 5 minutes then keep changing sides, then it will spit out the tape. GRR, anyone know how to fix that?

Calm, I have had this problem in other cassette players. Your cassette tape is probably wound too tight or the reels are binding. The tape mechanism switches playing directions when it senses excessive torque on the motor, i.e. at the end of a tape. You can fix this by FF or RW your tape completely. This unwinds/realigns the tape so the player won't think it has reached the end due to excessive torque.

Wow, a blast from the past......

I used to take out the offending cassette, and gently thump it repeatedly on the palm of my hand.... you can loosen up the overly-tight reels that way, and it should play....

.... don't think I've played a cassette half-a-decade.....

You might want to try adjusting the volume level on the Ipod. I found when it was too loud it would reverse a couple of times and them pop out.

Hey everyone. I'm Brendan's wife and just recently joined Disco Web. I probably won't post much, but do enjoy the education I get from reading your messages. Now that I have my own Disco, I'm even more interested.

Just wanted to thank you guys for your help with the tape player. My iPod is working great with the cassette adapter. I was driving in to work this morning in my beloved Disco, blasting my favorite music and thought "Life is Good."

So now that we've got the kinks worked out of that, Brendan will inherit my CD changer, since his XD doesn't have one. For those of you who don't have CD players, I'd highly recommend the iPod and cassette adapter as a good option. You don't have to carry CDs (or tapes) around and you can store a ton of music on them.

A word of caution: I've heard that in some cases, the iPod battery only lasts about 18 months (especially if it isn't allowed to run down before being charged again -- similar to a cell phone battery). I spoke to a guy at the Apple Store in Chicago today about that and he said he has heard of that happening, but the battery should last longer if it is recharged correctly. A new battery from Apple costs $99. Pretty pricey, especially every 18 months, but still cheaper than buying a new iPod. I'm hoping my battery lasts a little longer than that!

Again, thanks for your help!
