Very carefully. 1st you will need to remove the screws inside the cubby box. You can either do it correctly or the lazy way and try to strech it over the brake handle or disconnect the brake handle. More than likely if you try to pull it over it will brake. You will also need to pull up the tfer case boot, surround plastic trim and remove the window switch plate. You can pull it back and out without having to remove the lower dash it is just tight. Note: Some Discos had 2 screws going down in the console near the dash. Confirm yours does not. |

Will's discription is good and pretty on-target (at least for a 96, which mine is). I've pulled my center console out probably 50+ times and have it down to less than a two minute process with my leatherman. :-) Dump all my crap out of the center console. Pull the two screws in the cubby. Pop off the plastic pannel surrounding the gear shift. "Unhook" the diff-lock boot from the center console. Unscrew the handle from the diff-lock lever (taking the rubber boot with it). Remove the rubber mat from the center console. Unscrew the screws (two?) from the front of the console. Remove the rubber boot from the e-brake. Lift the e-brake about 25% and disconnect the brake cable from the lever and raise the lever 100%. Lift the console from the back and pull it a few inches toward the rear of the vehicle. Reach under the plastic near the passanger's leg and disconnect the cigar lighter (I broke mine the first time). Finish lifting and shifting the console toward the rear (you may have to change the e-brake lever's position a couple times) until it's completely free. Reassembly is a simple reversal of the steps. Be careful about stressing any plastic, it breaks easily (I took off a small chunk near the e-brake boot on my second attempt). It's sometimes tricky to wiggle the front of the console back under the dash for a good fit. Also, if your rear-seat floor heater ducts shift (they're just laying there) you'll have a frustrating time getting anything to line up. As a SERIOUS note: Reconnect the e-brake and set it before crawling under the truck and doing work. Lawrence 96 Disco - "Beowulf" - NH, USA

While my CDL lever was fubar (an internal pin was broken and prevented left-right motion) I had my console off a lot. My xfer case was still 100% operational, so I put a 13mm socket over the nut on top and ran a couple flexible extensions up thru the boot and a small hole I cut in the plastic console. Normally I could just pull my socket wrench out of my cubby and engage / disengage. Occassionally, though, one of the extensions would come unhooked and I would have to attack it from above since below was pretty damn hot from driving. Lawrence 96 Disco - "Beowulf" - NH, USA |
