I have a question for '03 DII owners. The manual shows 2 alternative stickers for the transfer case selector. One, with a picture of 2 axles with an x in the middle, which the manual says indicates a vehicle equipped with the optional cdl, and a different sticker with different graphics. My truck has the sticker that indicates the optional cdl. Of course, I don't have cdl. Do other North American (non-cdl) trucks have the same sticker?

Todd,

Was your '03 an early-build model? When I took my '03 in for its first maintenance, there were two service campaigns in effect.

One was to replace the CDL sticker with a non-CDL sticker. The second was to add a relay to permit delay shut-off of the headlights if I held down the remote lock.

As far as I know, most '03 North American models have the non-CDL sticker.

I don't know if it was an early build. I've been in for service twice and the sticker has not been replaced. If there was a service campaign for the cdl sticker, I wonder how many people bought DII's with the wrong sticker in place. When you bought yours, did you know it didn't have cdl?

Todd,

To be honest, when I bought my D2 I didn't know what CDL was and why I would want it. After being bitten hard by the Rover bug (and several rounds of upgrades later), I wish I had learned about CDL earlier. (The other thing I was not aware of was how fun and addicting Rovers are!)

If you look in your front driver's door(?), there should be a vehicle origin sticker on it. The sticker should say which month/year your Disco was built.

All the '03 D2s that I have seen at local dealerships (NJ, PA) have had the correct transfer case sticker. I'm sure you can ask your dealer to replace your CDL sticker with the correct one.

In the meantime, I'm looking forward to the day when I can swap out my transfer case for a CDL version.

Eugene, what is involved in swapping out the transfer case? Will an earlier or later (2004) version work? Land Rover must have a 2003 model as well for non-North American markets, right?

Todd,

As far as I know, the 2003-04 D2s utilize a LT230SE transfer case. The '03 models do not have a nipple or nut that permits for the installation of an aftermarket CDL kit. The '04 models come with CDL from the factory.

Non-North American '03 D2s offered CDL as standard or as an option. For those of us in the US, it looks like our options are as follows:

1) Swap out to an '04 transfer case;
2) Get one of the early D2 (1999, early 2000) transfer cases that had the CDL nipple and install an aftermarket kit;
3) Trade-in for an '04.

I'm not sure about the labor involved in swapping out the transfer case. Because my D2 is new and under warranty, I am weary of swapping out transfer cases with an unknown one from the junk-yard. Even a rebuilt transfer case poses some risk compared to the known transfer case on my car.

Unless my transfer case starts hiccuping, I'll probably wait another year or two before swapping out. I'm holding out hope that a third-party vendor might develop a kit that allows CDL to be retrofitted to a non-nippled transfer case.

Good luck,
-Eugene

Eugene - mid 2001 was the CDL cut-off. Up to then, they had CDLs. Mine is mid 2001 and has it.

Jim,

Disco2.com has a write-up on the effect that traction diffs have on CDL vs. non-CDL models.
http://www.disco2.com/faq/faq-answer.phtml?uid=106

I'm leaning towards a front and rear TrueTrac setup down the road. In the meantime, I placed calls to several LR shops asking about CDL options for the newer D2s.

Mines a British October 2001 and has it as well. Adding a servo to it to allow activation was the best mod I've done

Who makes an aftermarket CDL kit? That will be my 1st mod. Can factory shifter parts from an 04 be swapped in?

Thanks
Bob

There should be '03 parts that fit, right? CDL was an option on '03 models outside North America.

Why wouldn't someone with an '03 non-CDL just add a locker like ARB or Detroit? Is there an advantage with going with the LR CDL?

I have an '03 and was going to add a locker (probably ARB) sometime in the future.

Clay, look at the article in the link that Eugene posted above. I think that will answer your question.

Clay,

Without a CDL, the power generated by your engine is transmitted to the axle with least resistance. If one of your axles are hung up off the ground, it is that axle that will get the power.

Add a locker to the mix and things change slightly. If your locker is on the axle that is on the ground, the power is still transmitted to the axle with least resistance. If your locker is on the axle that is off the ground, then it depends on whether both wheels on that axle have traction or not.

If one wheel has traction, then your locker might be able to pull you out. If both wheels do not have traction, you're likely stuck.

I've probably simplified things greatly, but see the disco2.com link up above. The author went through all the possible scenarios.

Is that an ARB Bumper on the front of your truck?

Looks like one to me from the top. Good Picture! I haven't seen an ARB yet on an '03. Except for the picture ARB released. I would like to see one that retained the fog lights.

Hill,

My profile picture was taken when I had an ARB on the truck. I recently replaced the ARB with a Rovertym slimline.

Ok I was just wondering. Thanks, I am sure you like the Rovertym better. Do you have some pictures you can post or send me with both of the bumpers?

Hill

What made you change to Rovertym, just wondering?
