Hello,
I am looking at getting a used Land Rover but I was wondering what people would recomend for someone who needs to do some towing, will take off-road regulary, and will work for a daily short distance commuter? I would not mind changing out stock equipment for better equipment e.g. getting rid of air suspension.

Thank You,
Daniel

Tow what and how much does it weight. What speed will you need to tow at and how far?

You would likely need something with the 4.6 engine for *any* type of real towing. I would not tow anything with the old 3.9. 4.0 is marginal and 4.6 is definitely the most powerful. Unfortuntely, this will also put you in the most expensive vehicles.

Depends on what sort of $'s you want to spend ? and how many people you want to carry.

Money no object - get a D110

For a reasonable ride - any of the others are fine.

If I had it again I'd probably go with a grey market 110.

I have an 89 RRC. I absolutely love it. I drove this past summer roundtrip from Las Vegas to Spokane, Washington. I pulled a 4500 lb. Airstream back from Spokane, and while the motor is a little old it still pulled strong. It was a little thirsty but it was excellant.

The D110 will not suit your needs. Out of the entire available international LR lineup the D110 may actually be one of the worst at towing.

If towing is an issue then a 4.6HSE or 4.6DS2 will work best. Then again, it all depends on what you define as "some towing".

Funny how the bulk of the horse boxes I used to see back home were pulled by D110's ??? I guess no one let them in on the secret :-)

A Range Rover Classic is one of the best deals in the used Rover market right now and the early models with the 3.9 are fairly easy to work on. They will do a good job pulling a light trailer as well. As for using a 110 to tow, dont knock it until youve tried it. The larger brakes, heavy-duty rear axle and longer wheelbase are nice features. The lower geared transfercase that most come equipped with means they actually pull pretty well. Ive used mine to pull a car trailer loaded with a RRC and it does ok. Now if I could just stuff a 4.6 in it, it would be even better!

I have to argue with you some of you guys on towing. First of all, I very regularly tow a 5200 lb trailer. I have used the Disco to tow it and I really can't complain about the engine. I tow on the highway and the Disco can keep 60mph on all but the steepest hills. But, it is a horrible tow vehicle! Any semi you pass will get the Disco swaying all over the road. It is very very unnerving. So, even if the Disco had a 4.6 what would be the point? For comparison, I usually use my fathers Silverado he bought specifically for towing. It is LS Z71 typically loaded out truck. I could set cruise control at 75 and the thing would not break a sweat.....but it also does not sway. However, I would not go that fast with the trailer becuase it would not be safe. Face it, with that much weight how could I swerve to aviod an accident or have to slam on the brakes. The trailer has disc brakes, but they dont entirely make up for the weight. Anyhow, I will get to the point. For real towing it would be hard to be the stability the 110 would provide. It would have enough power to go as fast as you you can safely go. I like the idea of an RRC with an engine conversion, but I would get a LWB from the 95 model year with the nicer interior. But, if you are towing someting 4k or less then any Rover would be plenty stable...save a D90. If we are talking less than 3k, I would get a Freelander and put a 2" lift on it and a winch up front. You can buy class 3 hitches for those through the aftermarket.

any LR can tow. question becomes how often, distance, etc.. have to also not agree with you Curtis on 110s and towing. my 109 with basically 110 running gear hauled a 2 axle U-Haul fully loaded from PA to OK. it did it well enough that we got pulled over for speeding in Ill..

Classic RRs are going for cheap, yet, finding a good one is getting harder and harder. and a poorly maintained RR that is rusted in areas you can't see is no bargain.

the 4.6 engine does have more power, yet again, only you can decide if what you're towing requires it.

there are many variables to consider. imho, the best maintained used LR that you can afford is probably a good place to start.

I have been looking at getting a new Defender 110 wagon from East Coast Rovers. It should be excellent off-road and I love the styling.

Thank You One and All,
Daniel
