thought I'd give this bbs a shot - just installed win2k pro out of the box. Its connected to a Linksys router awaiting DHCP. Install went without a hitch, nic cards is able to get IP, ping gw, other pc's on same network, and I'm able to map network drives and transfer data with no problems. Problem is: Try to get on Internet and no luck. Seems I can't get to the DNS of my ISP. This used to work earlier in the week before I reloaded machine. I do nslookup and timed out. One thing I notice is the DNS suffix is something strange and seems bound to the network adapter. The options I know of to change this doesn't work. ( right click My Comp, Properties, Network ID, ... ). ipconfig /all shows info to be correct with the exception of Connection-specific DNS Suffix. Again, when I try to change it, it doesn't appear anywhere to be removed or even changed. tried different cables, haven't tried new nic yet. any ideas? |

I'm having a similar problem with Win98. I discovered an error message while attempting to get the internet back up "Windows sockets initialization failed" I still haven't been able to fix the problem though... |

Are you sure the router has connectivity to the internet ?

Update: I finally found a fix on the web. I ran it on my 98 box and I'm back in business. Basically, it repaired and replaced the Winsock dll's and fixed some registry entries. It's an exe file that say's only for use on Win98. Kenny |

I've got connection to the Net on another pc connected thru the same router. See my other post here at this bbs: http://www.gotapex.com/forums/showthread.php?s=425a922980a166d087f669bfe0e78018& threadid=70443 |

Are you Nic's auto config or Manual? If auto make the manual and change as needed (worked for my brother when I was helping him with same issue) If Manual and you can't make the change, remove drivers and reload drivers for the nics and try again. |

Martin, I'm with you... underlying problem sounds as if the MAC address needs to be spoofed with the Linksys using the MAC address of the NIC in the box that was originally connecting to the ISP. |

Yep .. I would check if your router managed to get an IP address from the ISP. Since you manage to talk with the rest of the machines on your network the complete internal thing seems like it is working. Do a tracert to www.msn.com and see where it starts to fail. I bet it will stop after the router.

I don't know whats going on lately. The machine in question gets ALL IP and network information bound to adapter as it should from the router. Router accepts IP from ISP just fine. Router handles DHCP addressing and can assign IP address to another computer just fine. I hard coded the IP addresses/GW/Sub Mask. and still no worky. a traceroute results in a message "unable to resolve target system" Fuck Microsoft, I think. |

Does the IP address you get when you ipconfig on that computer start 169.x.x.x? Or is it the same as your working machine but just the last octet different? If the address is basically the same as the working computer and everything else is the same, then something in your routers ACLs are telling the router not to let you out. If, let's say, the working computer is 10.1.1.5 and the non working one is 10.1.1.6, try swapping IP addresses to rule out some odd ACL on the router tied to the 10.1.1.6 address. pwc |

I assume you already entered your broadband account info (not just the addresses) in the required fields in the Linksys router admin panel? Also, what kind of service is it? Cable and DSL have 2 differant configurations on most LinkSys units. Lastly, this is a "Cable/DSL" router and not just a router right? |

Peter - no, I'm not getting the autoconfiguration IP addresses. The NIC card appears to be working fine. I can't reach any DNS servers. I will reset the router when I get back into town in a couple weeks. If that doesn't work, then I'm swapping out the NIC cards with another one to test that. I don't think another re-load of the OS is necessary. Chris. C. - Yes, the router has been working for years now. I also had some suspicions about the router blocking the IP that was assigned to the PC. I hard coded another IP high up in the range just to see. Still no worky. Thanks to everyone for the advice. btw, I'm a senior sys admin so don't be afraid to hit me with the techie terminology. -Kris |

quote:ping gw, other pc's on same network, and I'm able to map network drives and transfer data with no problems.
I just reread this. If that's true, then it is the router one way or another. Without knowing much about Linksys routers, I'd look at the listing of connected machines and make sure the MAC address matches what the MAC address of your NIC is. Barring that I'd do a quick swap of the NIC. If that still didn't do it, I'd try using the adress from the working machine just to see if maybe the router isn't using some specific whitelist you may have set up a while back. It shouldn't since it is doing DHCP as well. If you can ping the gateway and can ping other machines on the same network then it's not the OS. pwc |

When I switched from DSL to cable, I had the exact same issue. WinXP pro and Linksys Cable/DSL firewall router BEFSX41. Had the Time Warner guy take a look at it. Turned out to be the Linksys. There is a reset button on the back side of the router. Did you try that ? It worked on mine. |
