We had a bunch of snow and ice here in Oregon this past week. I put my 97 Disco in Lock and was doing some driving. THe snow is now melted and I can't seem to get the thing out of Lock and into high gear for normal driving. I put the car in nuetral, I'll be moving at about 5mph and I cant get the diff lever to move over to the right to get it out of Lock. I can move the diff lever into the neutral position....... just not down to HI/LO. I followed all the different instructions in the manual..(ie: reversing, park, neutral...etc..) still no luck. I can slide the lever over a little bit and down, it just doesn't feel like it's engaging out of Diff Lock. Plus, the Lock light on my Dash is illuminated. Any ideas? I don't want to drive until I get it fixed. |

Try and reverse 30 yards or so then stop and pull it out of lock and into hi, failing that you may have to get underneath and tap the linkage over with a hammer. Cheers wizard |

I always reverse up, after I,v moved the lock leaver to Hi. I never revers up with the lock in 4x4. I all so move my lock leaver to Hi while I'm still moving and fined that I get a smoother change from 4x4 and if the light stays on I just hit the cluch agian and it go's out. Oh but that works for Beach driving, not much snow here. Noel |

I have an automatic rover.... I tried reversing.. still no luck. I will try it for 30 yards or so and see if that helps. |

sounds like the typical problem with the linkage.. its gets corroded and refused to budge... you will need to spray some penetrating grease onto it.. you can see if you climb under the truck.. it should be barely seen above the trans near the front cats... can't imagine snow or ice has frozen it.. (there is a ton of heat from cats that are near there...) worse case scenario.. you'll have to pull linkage out and coat liberally with antisieze grease. Good Luck |

Ken, The snow in SE Portland is still everywhere, 12" in some places on the side streets, and now has ice on top, I have been driving with the diff. locked on my 97 D1 5spd. and had some problems engaging at first. I found that at a dead stop, in neutral, pulling over to diff high or 4 high and slightly rolling in neutral and then stopping made it go right in. It takes me about 10 to15yrds for the light to go off. Hope this helps, Tim |

Tim, I'm also in S.E. Portland. I just took my 97 D1 (Automatic) out and got it into HI and out of Lock... Yet, the Diff Lock light is still on. Is this light very accurate? It is in the HI position. so Should I be worried about it anymore? |

Ken, I would go from Hi 4 to neutral, slight roll, stop and back to Hi 4 and then drive at least 50 yrds, turn, back up and drive back. If the light stays on maybe keep it around 40mph until the snow thaws. Tim |

If your CDL lever is all the way over to the right and your diff. lock light is still on, your differential is probably still locked. We have all had the experience where backing the vehicle up will often times release the diff. lock. When this fails, I have always been able to get the CDL unlocked by getting the vehicle on a slippery surface (snow, gravel or mud work fine) and, while driving forward at 5-10 m.p.h., brakeing just hard enough to engage the anti-lock brake system. On my 97 this seems to do the trick. Rudd |

I actually fixed the problem. I wasnt pushing the lever hard enough to the right and down. Man, that thing sure does take a lot of force. My linkage/lever must have been locked up some or stiff. I felt like I was going to break it, but it finally went far enough over and down..... and out of Lock. It now also works much easier in and out. I should prolly use it once and while to keep all the parts moving. thanks though for all your help... |
