I recently have heard a rattle near my front muffler and cat (before the "Y"). Is this bad news? I also noticed a leak in that muffler on the front side of it probably from something poking it (and rust).

I got a code of P0420 recently (Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1). Does this have anything to do with this?

How many miles? The cats are covered up to 80k, I think?

Yes, code would be related to the cat rattling. It must be a 1996 or newer because you have the OBDII system. Depending on the year you might want to check the emissions warranty, you might be covered.

Regardless, there is no doubt you'll need new cats. There is a thread already that discusses your options, do a search on Catalytic Converters.

It is a 96 and 84k miles. I need a new muffler so can I (and where to) get a pre-built full exhaust from the Y back? And do I need the rear cat? Is there a sensor there?

A decent muffler shop should be able to hook you up - much cheaper than a genuine replacement. Or check out aftermarket stainless kit (like NRP).
