I wasn't going to post this question, because it seemed like such a fluke...but I thought, what the heck. I always enjoy knowing if my trials and tribulations are shared.

We were driving down south on Xmas day and were about two hours outside of Knoxville, TN. My husband was driving the Disco and suddenly (I can't remember if it was after a lane change or not) he noticed that the turn signal lights were flashing in the dash. Checked the indicator switch and it was in the normal, off, position. He checks it again, left, right, off...still going. We drive on....check the hazards, nope that indicator light comes on separately. Finally stop and pull off at a CLOSED gas station. I get out of the car...all the hazard and indicator lights are flashing and have been as we have been driving down the highway! We turn off the engine...still flashing. Gripe to each other...WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON...bang around a little....finally go to start the car again...they go off!?!

It was so random and it was a singular event, but I'm wondering if this is the start to other Lucas problems or perhaps a short or weak fuse? I had my starter replaced two days prior to that, but I don't believe anything else was touched.

Just looking for feedback/stories that are similar. Thanks!

That happened to me once too Susan. I ended up pulling the fuse for the turn signals to get it to go off. They reset themselves and I haven't seen that problem since. I posted the same thing on here and some folks thought my inertia switch may have been accidentally tripped.

Has also happened to me with a '99 SI. I was taking a, ahem, 'shortcut' across a median and hit the center ditch a little too hard and the hazards came on. Hitting the turn signals or hazard switch didn't do anything while driving, but after pulling over, turning the engine off, and then restarting, everything was fine. I figured the inertia switch was tripped in the rather hard bump. Don't know why it would trip just changing lanes though... maybe just a Western North Carolina thing...?? :-)

What is the inertia switch, what does it do?

The inertia switch is the pendulum-type (?) switch mounted on the firewall that senses if you have been in an accident. It's mounted on the left side of the firewall of a DII - I don't know if that is the same location for a DI and it is too cold outside to go look right now... If you jolt it some it will set off the hazards (like in a wreck) or with a hard jolt I assume it is what triggers the airbags (don't know this for sure though). If the unit is loose or in some way damaged, it's a possibility that small jolts could set it off. With a DII, when the airbag deploys the hazards come on and the doors unlock. I don't know if when just the hazards come on in a hard jolt (with DI or DII) if the doors unlock. If they do, that's a pretty good sign the inertia switch has tripped though and causing the hazards.

Matt,
I don't think it was my inertia switch as we were only doing highway driving the entire two days...and I have certainly done WAY worse in my truck that could JAR the switch. Who knows. Sounds like your experience could have been related to the I.S. though...

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Asheville...glad to see someone on Discoweb from that area! My husband and I come down every year and have contemplated moving there on occasion. Great place! Welcome to D-web!
