Hi Guys, I'm running a '96 D1 SD with a stick. I drive in snow a lot and often engage (I think) my diff lock. But the light on the dash never comes on. Is this a common problem, or is my dl not even engaging? The lever goes across just fine, and I am pretty sure my traction improves. Another thing is that often when I put the key in the ignition it refuses to turn. No matter which way up the key is. After several tries, it'll turn and start the rig, but even though I oiled the key, it still does it. Ideas? My rear window washer jets are another problem. Seems like no matter how I adjust them, the fluid either hits the rubber glass seal or goes off into space. Okay, last one. My rear door rattles. I'm sure the door itself is not loose- but something is. I'm planning on replacing the rig later in the year with a RR 4.6HSE but want to fix this stuff first! Any thoughts/suggestions much appreciated! Cheers, Paul. |

Re: CDL light. I have the D2 with the CDL, and the light no longer comes on in the dash. The mechanism is smooth and feels right though, and it drags a bit on gravelly tarmac roads so I know its engaged. The sensor is either sticking, or the wire that heads to your ecu is cut. Dean |

To test if it engages or not - just put rig on jack stands, crank it up, lock, and try (together with someone else) to block front or rear wheels (both) from spinning. Then unlock and do same. If there is difference - its just light snuffed it. If there is no difference - yer CDL is ceased to be working. |

On the problem about the key - when you insert the key if it wont turn then if you turn the steering wheel to either the left or the right while you are trying to crank it, it will usually unlock and you can crank the car. It may be something as simple as that - mine will lock and to unlock it all i do is turn the steering wheel and it unlocks everytime vaden |

Yep. I frequently need to tug on the wheel to get my key to turn. With the rear washer jet, I think there may be an alignment tool. I tried to adjust mine once by hand and only made it worse. With enough patience, I think you could do it. |

Chk if the switch is still working. A wire or a terminal might be broken - might be snapped while driving over branches or similar. * Unplug the terminals and chk for continuity when CDL is supposed to be in. * Chk wirecircuit Don't forget CDL often doesn not lock up right away. Step away from accellerator, and push it again - for me that's the usual cure for both locking and unlocking. You don't need to crank engine to chk if one prop is open/turning. Lift one end of the vehicle, and chk if it is possible to turn propshaft on that end. If not, CDL is not in. Roverly Yours, Frode |

Also, regarding your CDL issue: The linkage under your console might not actually be engaging the CDL. I recently had my lever mechanism replaced due to some internal problem (the xfer case was fine, it was just the lever). When the dealership reconnected everything, they set something a little wrong with the linkage. It shifts low-high fine and I can engage and disengage the CDL in high with ease. However, the CDL never engages in low range. The lever moves fine, but the light doesn't come on and the truck doesn't lock up. When I spoke w/ the service team they told me they probably just need to adjust the linkage. I have done a few tweaks of the placement of the low-high linkage onto the lever to get the right feel for engaging that, so I'm guessing they're right about the CDL issue as well. I'll know for sure next week when the truck goes back in to have it corrected. Lawrence 96 Disco - "Beowulf" - NH, USA |
