1. I have a 2000 discovery with 53,000 miles with no modifications. When traveling at 55-65 miles per hour, truck vibrates. Is this a sign of a faulty u-joint. Vibrations seem to be coming from the front. But when I travel at 70 miles per hour no vibrations. Dealer said that is was my tires causing the vibrations because they were not balanced properly. Had new Michelins xpcs put on recently, though vibrations were present with old tires. 2. Truck shutters when it shifts from 1st gear to 2nd gear but only at operating temperatures and when you accelerate very slowly. Anybody else experience this? Thanks, Michael

Someone recently had a thread on vibrations and there is a link to a Rover TSB. The low speed shutter and higher speed vibration can both be u-joint related. You can try shaking or twisting the front driveshaft to detect any play - should be none. I have heard many people with D2s have had u-joint problems since the u-joints are not greaseable. Do a search. The wheel bearings can cause vibration if loose - unlikely at 53K unless never serviced (repacked) or if serviced and not adjusted properly. Jack up one wheel and try shaking it by grasping at the 12 and 6 o'clock positions of the tire. Should be no play. Unbalanced tires can definately cause the vibes, but your low speed shudder makes me think u-joints. The transmissions are relatively trouble free unless not serviced. Per the last RRC TSB, the screen (filter) should be changed at least once at 30K miles and the fluid changed periodically per the owners manual. Even if you have never had the transmission serviced, I doubt at 53K that it would be showing any symptoms. |
