My 2001 Land Rover Discovery has been great....I bought it new in July of 2001, and have had no problems of any importance excepting that for the third time now the service engine light came on. The Disco has only 16,000 miles on the clock and the three service light incidents have occurred over the past three months or so...it has been religiously serviced by my local Land Rover Centre and has always been handled with loving care. On the first episode I took it to the dealership and they seemed to feel that it was not a big deal- just a glitch as they had forget to reset it after an oil change, the second time it happened they had replaced a spark plug wire and seemingly forgot to get the cable secure on the wire and the light came on a few hundred miles afterwards, and now it has mysteriously lit up again-although it was only in the LR Centre for the the plug wire two weeks ago....I am beginning to wonder since the problems have happend so closely to one another if the "idiot light" that appears on the dash is not more of a problem that a helpful device?? Is it normal to have problems such as described above? Just thought I'd "cry on your shoulders" to learn from your experiences! Thanks for any replies!

HHMM...I wish my '01 had 16k on it...I'm wondering why the light would come after a oil change. I can see why it would come with a plug wire off, but it should reset after the 3rd start without any faults...this is interesting...see if they will tell the codes (faults) they are reading with testbook and it may provide some insight to actually what's going on...this is stupid, but your is your fuel cap tight? if not, you'll get the light...really can't think of anything else...

they told me it wasn't a big deal until after my warranty ran out. then I was told I had a sticking exhaust valve that would cost around two-thousand to fix. I would mention it to the dealer. You have plenty of warranty left though for them to find it. If its any relief, I have a 2001 with 125,000 on the clock and the service engine light has off and on throughout this time with no related problems. I never got the "sticking exhaust valve" fixed either. one quick thing to check is the gas cap. if its not on completely, it will make the light come on. hope this helps.

I'd take it to an independent shop and ask them to look at the fault code in the computer. It could be a zillion things, but the computer will pinpoint it.

I have a buddy with an 01 DII (60,000 miles). I was in the Rover Shoppe (Houston TX) today when he came in with his light on. Hooking it up to the computer revealed there was an issue in the automatic transmission with 4th gear.

Good luck.
