Our 1999 Discovery II makes a very odd noise only when it is extremely cold - below 10 - extreme for Boston. I would describe the noise as a prolonged (and constant) chirp. It occurs at a certain engine speed and I think it is something vibrating from within the HVAC system. The noise does not go away by changing the HVAC fan speed or adjusting the vent output. AND it happens after the car warms up and only in extreme cold - like we've had recently in Boston. It does not sound like the HVAC fan going bad. Anyone else experience this? Any ideas? Thanks.

It may be the speedomoter cable behind the dash. Just a thought.

my TReK has been making a few different noises this winter, my other DII doesn't make any unusual noises in the cold...The TReK gets quite after the temps come up. Mine happens before it gets warmed up. i know its not the same problem you have, just posting my rattles to let ya know it happens. And can be a bear to track down!
Good Luck and let us know what you find,
Lewis

Yeah, they use the force you dumbass.

In the D2 it's a wire. An electronic signal wire.

Hardly the sort of thing that would produce a "prolonged (and constant) chirp."

Uh Craig it was a joke no reason to be so bent out of shape. I am so sorry that I am not up to par with you in the ownership of DII. It was just a thought.

LOL! You know, you are right Mr. Maine'r!!! It's not annoying, but being curious I wondered what the heck it could be. Honestly, I think there is condensation somewhere in the HVAC and when it is really really cold, it freezes and vibrates. But, that's just the opinion of a shade-tree mechanic! Thanks all!!!

I get the same noise in my DI recently with the frigid weather in Boston. I have tracked it down to underneathe the passenger side (below airbag area) Did this while driving and was actually able to stop it just by pressing on a certain area. Never did check to see what was there but it seemed like it may have been a small fan to the ear. As if the cold had cause an imbalance on a rotating assembly (fan)
